Obesity: Unemployed could get weight loss jabs to return to work 23/10/2024

Thoughts?

I'm conflicted on this...

There's no doubt that obesity is costing individuals their health and costing the nation as the NHS spends £11bn a year on conditions related to obesity.

So on the face of it there's a saving to the national finances by reducing obesity, and there's certainly a positive health impact for the individual, but...

Is there really a saving once we factor in the cost of the drugs?

Once the trial ends, what happens to the individuals? Have they been coached in behavioural change so the weight doesn't rebound back on?

Or are we looking at life time drug support to manage the obesity?

Also, is there any evidence showing a direct link between obesity and willingness to work?

This trial seems to suggest that the thinking is if people lose weight they're more likely to seek employment, I'm not convinced this is true on a large scale.

Certainly one set of winners are Eli Lilly and Company...

Finally, as Lord James Bethell notes, we need to make "concrete steps to pivot to prevention so that we’re not simply medicalising the national obesity problem."

Be Honest…

People tell me they can’t lose weight due to their hormones - and yes at midlife they can make things more tricky, but…

Be honest…

How much are your choices playing a role?��Let’s use a simple example, say your a female with a maintenance calorie intake of 1500 calories a day give or take. (Guys the same goes for you - your calorie target is likely to be higher, but you're also likely to eat and drink more).

That’s maintenance, not fat loss. So you’re eating 1500 to 1600 a day Monday to Friday. Great, you won’t lose weight but you won’t be putting on too much weight.

Then comes the weekend. Some cheeky drinks on Friday or Saturday and maybe a take-away, or coffee and cake with friends, and you’re up at 3000 calories for the day…

Then Sunday it’s the roast - depending on your portions sizes then you’re looking at 1000 to 2000 calories. Before dessert.

Then there’s a few glasses of wine.

Because you’ve drunk and you’ve got munchies maybe some chips and a bag of crisps later with more wine.

Before you know it you’re at 4000 to 5000 calories. That’s for your roast session and not including whatever else you ate and drank Sunday (croissant? latte?).

So the problem isn’t your hormones is that your pretty much consuming your weeks’ worth of maintenance calories in 48 hours - in addition to the calories you consumed the rest of the week - so you’re actually double (or more) your maintenance target.

Result? Weight gain.

But you tell yourself it was just a roast dinner.

Only it wasn’t, it was all the other stuff too.��

Let’s not even go into how various hormone and neurotransmitter levels are affected, or how not exercising compounds this.��

Look, you can enjoy your food (we help our clients achieve this) and get the results you’re looking for, but it can be tricky,

��It’s all too easy to fall into this trap , but before you looking at blaming other factors, track your food over a couple of weeks to get an accurate idea of how much you’re really eating - you may be surprised.

We took some time out last week completely off-grid and it was lovely!

Cooking on an open fire under the stars, wild swimming, and no social media/email/phone distractions.

When we got home on Friday I was thrilled to find that I'd won a competition run by Make A Difference Summits explaining my vision for workplace culture, employee health, and wellbeing.

Many of you may know Claire Davis and I for the work we do around midlife, but under our Quantum Coaching badge we also run corporate wellbeing workshops and programmes, as well as executive coaching.

Claire's a qualified Life Coach and Stress Management Consultant, and I'm an Associate Member of the International Society of Coaching Pyschologists, with a Masters in Applied Psychology and hold a Master Coach certification.

We are both NLP Coaches as well as having our qualifications around the physical body: hormones, nutrition, gut health, personal training/exercise, meaning we come from a fully aligned and integrated approach to health and performance.
