International Dragon Class Tasmanian Championship 2022

The Ridgeway One Design Tasmanian International Dragon Championship, hosted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, was completed today with fading wind conditions only allowing one race after a full program of five races on Saturday.

Leading into today’s Race 6, Nick Rogers in Karabos IX was tied with Hugh Wardrop’s Ridgeway on 15 points. In third place overnight was David Graney sailing Magic.

Race 6, sailed this morning in light conditions, saw local skipper Jock Young sailing Xanthos sn**ch a close win from Rogers and Western Australian Sandy Anderson in Plum Crazy.

Anderson’s third place and consistency throughout the series saw her leapfrog Graney to take third overall at the end of six races.

The breeze then faded away leaving the Race Committee no alternative but to abandon racing for the rest of the day and declare the winners.

Series favourite Nick Rogers, sailing with ILCA 7 skipper Sam King and long-time crew Leigh Behrens, took the Tasmanian Championship as well as the Barry Calvert Memorial Trophy, with Hugh Wardrop, crewed by Tim Vincent and Max Gluskie in second place. In third on a countback was Sandy Anderson, sailing with Caroline Gibson and Mike Wilkinson.

On corrected time, the Cuthbertson Trophy went to David Graney, Murray Jones and Finlay Cooper in Magic, with Xanthos, (Jock Young, Chris Steilberg and Jim Dodd) in second and Ridgeway, (Hugh Wardrop, Tim Vincent and Max Gluskie) taking third.

The next big event on the Dragon calendar is the Prince Philip Cup to be hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in January 2023.

Somewhere out there is Vancouver. Trust me. A challenging weekend. At times there was more tidal current than wind. And lots of freighters to try to choose the right side of.
Good to be on the water racing again with and against a great group. And ”At least it rained”

And we had a nice paddle back to the club when the last race was abandoned. Good to see 8 Dragons out there.

Dragons out in Kansai.

During the last few years Edgewater YC in Cleveland has had a memorial race called the Clair on Memorial Day, but had to be postponed till July 3 this year due to weather conditions. Normally none of the Dragons are in the water at that time so we are unable to participate.

The Clair invites all monohull sailboats including both PHRF and One Design with a pursuit start and this year we were able to enter. With 34 boats entered, USA256, Scamp had the second start of the day. The wind was out of the NorthEast at 10-15 knots with a rolling sea. Pretty good conditions for Dragons.

Scamp was leading with a half mile to the finish and boats close behind. At 200 yards from the finish they were passed by a Melges32 to finish 2nd. Tommy and his son Ryan were thrilled to finish so well against so many great boats and sailors.

The Dragons are getting more recognition in Cleveland!

Fun Cleveland Race Week this year; so glad to be out and racing again! Saturday cancelled all races and all classes. 30-40 knots, 8 foot waves. Sunday very light wind and shifty with leftover slop from Saturday 8 footers. Most classes only got one race in on Sunday. Our race course managed to get two races in. Ended in a three-way tie. Tie breaker gave the win to USA285 Niagara. Congrats to Hunter and crew Ed and Clay!

Congrats to the new Dragon World Champions!

Please welcome James Smekal to the Dragon Class in North America. James has sailed with the Cleveland Fleet for a couple of years and purchased USA253, Orca two years ago (not the best timing since pretty much everything in 2020 was cancelled). He will be racing her in Cleveland Race Week this coming weekend.

USA253 is the second fibreglass Dragon built by Børresen and the first one in North America. She was bought by Maurice Van Horne who had her shipped to Rochester NY in 1972. She was originally called Applejack.

Kudos to the RMYS.

Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta - Overall Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron's (RMYS) 30th Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta (AWKR) came to an end on Port Phillip in Victoria this afternoon, when winners were crowned and other special prize recipients were announced.

USA296 Elska is back!

Last summer the Nantucket ferry Grey Lady IV hit a Dragon on her mooring (USA296 Elska, a restored 1947 Woodnutt). You can read her story in the latest online IDA Magazine. Luckily, she was not sunk, and Woody Metzger, her shipwright and his partner Jim Donovan have been working on her restoration. I think you’ll agree she is looking better than ever. Zum 60. (sic!) Mal fand am Wochenende 1. Mai die Damenregatta der Drachenflotte Nord im NRV mit insgesamt 8 Teams statt. Gewinnerin ist Sophie Baltes mit Pia Bamberger und Frank Blohm. Zweite wurde Gina Nugit mit den Brüdern Maxi und Vincent Dohse auf der GER 1203 „Rocco“ ( alle NRV) vor Sandra Valeska Bruhns mit ihrem Gatten Arnt und Max Droege (alle NRV) auf der „Iskareen“:
