It's been just over two weeks and the surface dust has been drastically reduced. Dusting table surfaces was a daily occurrence and is now only necessary every 6 days. 5 Reasons wildfire smoke is even more dangerous than you had thought.

It's much more than just a bad smell in the air. Wild fire smoke is a very serious health hazard.

1. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) levels skyrocket.

Wildfire smoke contains a high concentration of fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5. These microscopic particles, 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller, can be inhaled deep into the lungs, leading to a variety of health issues, including aggravated asthma, nonfatal heart attacks, respiratory symptoms (such as coughing and difficulty breathing), and premature death in people with heart or lung disease.

2. Toxic gasses are released

Wildfire smoke is also comprised of numerous toxic gases, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These gases can cause a range of short and long-term health effects. For example, high levels of carbon monoxide can be life-threatening, while nitrogen oxides can cause respiratory issues and contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone.

3. Ground level ozone build-up

Wildfire smoke contributes to the formation of ground-level ozone, a harmful air pollutant. Ozone can irritate the airways and exacerbate chronic lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Long-term exposure can also lead to the development of these conditions and can cause premature death.

4. Increased physical irritations

The particles and gases in wildfire smoke can cause physical irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract. This can lead to symptoms like coughing, a scratchy throat, irritated sinuses, shortness of breath, chest pain, headaches, stinging eyes, and a runny nose.

5. Long-term health risks

Prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke may increase the risk of long-term health issues. While research is still ongoing, it's believed that long-term exposure to PM2.5 and other pollutants in wildfire smoke could contribute to the development of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have also suggested a potential link between long-term exposure to air pollution and a higher risk of neurological disorders, adverse birth outcomes, and certain types of cancer.
