Fourteen years ago today, John Perry Barlow reading a poem at Yoshi's SF. Barlow's lyrical contributions to the Grateful Dead were profound. I was working with CB-3 and Michael Kang of The String Cheese Incident for a couple years as their manager, as well as doing PR, social media, tour management, graphic design, photos, etc. A few weeks earlier Kang had told me that his friend was the manager of apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas, who was starting an indigenous music non-profit, Jeepney Music, with a label release event in Beverly Hills and that we should go. On my way down Kang called and said he couldn’t make it. I got to the party and it was full-on red carpet and paparazzi, etc. I met Kang’s friend who was a big-time manager in LA. I was mingling with the people and always the first thing people would say is “what do you do?” At one point the manager’s assistant saw me and asked if I wanted to walk down the red carpet and I said sure. We went outside and right as we got out there Fergie and Will-I-Am showed up, this was 2010 so they were really big at the time. The paparazzi went crazy and I was in shock from the whole scene and mesmerized. The guy from La Bamba was out there too. I realized I lost the assistant and I couldn’t get back inside. My contact wasn’t picking up the phone and she had walked me in. I wasn’t on the list and there was a huge line outside. After a long time I banged on a back door and a bouncer answered and said he remembered me talking to the manager and let me in. Right after that I walked in and past a group of people. I heard someone say this is my favorite writer, John Perry Barlow, introducing him to someone else. I stop in my tracks, mouth agape. I introduced myself to him and told him I was there because I was working with Kang. He say, “Oh I wrote lyrics for Cheese and Kang is a good friend.” I told him about the upcoming show in SF at Yoshi’s in a few weeks and said I would put him on the list with however many people he wanted. He gave me his number and said to check in around then. I called him a few days before and he said he wasn’t sure if he can make it but called the day before. I asked if he might consider reading a poem, lyrics to Cassidy, or something and I would pay him out of my own pocket. He said probably not. I called the day before the show to see if he wanted to go and get the guest list. He picked up and said I am writing a poem to read at your show tomorrow! He said it was his partner’s birthday and to put Lizzie Jagger, and Sean Lennon on the list including a few other people. Those two didn’t come. He read the poem at the show, listen at the link below, which he wrote for his partner at the time, Katherine. We hung out and ate birthday cake, etc. Later Barlow gave me a hug on the way out and said thanks for getting me to write a poem, I haven’t written one in 5 years. I ran into him a number of times throughout the years before he passed in 2018. https://soundcloud.com/soja-music-productions/john-perry-barlow-reading-his?utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing Photos of Barlow reading the poem Jamie Soja Photography and photo of me on the red carpet.
One of the highlights of my recent trip to London was seeing Les Miserables - Musical at the Sondheim Theatre. I saw it as a kid and it had a profound effect on me. This performance was just as powerful and moving. Jamie Soja Photography

Rest in Peace , one of the last of the legendary singers from his era, who transcended the generation gap. He went from being a soldier during World War II to playing with Lady Gaga. I took these photos over two nights in SF at Davies Symphone Hall in SF. The first night there were two other photographers and the second night I was the only photographer approved and got some of my best photos of him.
