What is Frailty?
Frailty is a common medical syndrome with multiple causes and contributors. It is characterized by decreased strength, endurance and reduced function. It is also characterized by an increased risk of falls, hospitalisation, delirium and death.

What are some common features of frailty?

Loss of muscle mass, loss of bone density, unexplained weight loss, malnutrition, poor appetite, exercise intolerance and low physical activity, frequent falls, immobility, incontinence, cognitive changes, depressive mood and impaired functional performance.

Can physiotherapy improve frailty?

Yes, physiotherapists are important in preventing frailty as well as identifying those at risk of frailty. Frailty is common but not an inevitable part of ageing, and those living with frailty are able to reverse the effects. Physical activity is safe and effective in prevention and treatment of frailty. Falls prevention programs and multicomponent exercise programs are essential in improving cardiorespiratory function, muscle function, flexibility and functional ability.

Denis is one of our lovely clients who has been part of the MoveWell family since 2019 and has been seen once weekly to work on general upper and lower body strengthening, balance training and falls prevention strategies.

Denis has battled with long-standing osteoarthritic pain in his elbow and knee which can cause a hinderance to his progression and ability to engage with certain exercises. Despite this, Denis is always in bright spirits, keen to engage and motivated to push himself and is always up for the challenge!

In Denis’ most recent assessment period, he has seen improvements in his balance and mobility scores and is now even implementing outdoor mobility into his physiotherapy sessions, all of which are huge progressions for Denis and we are remarkably proud of his ongoing efforts and achievements.

Well done Denis, keep up the amazing work!

Do I need to keep track of my exercise and repetitions ?

- It is important to keep track of the amount of exercise/physical activity you are completing each week as it is shown greater than three hours per week of balance retraining has a greater effect/results.

- You can utilise practice sheets, counters, counting applications on smartphones or an exercise diary to track the amount of exercise/physical activity you complete.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month with World Parkinson’s Day recognised on 11 April each year.

Today in Australia, 37 people will hear the words ‘you have Parkinson’s’ for the very first time. That’s more than one person every hour, of every day.

Parkinson’s Awareness Month provides opportunities to learn more about the issues facing people living with Parkinson’s every day – and how their lives can be improved – particularly through exercise, social opportunities, and community activities.

Parkinson’s is a progressive, degenerative condition of the central nervous system. Its causes are unknown, and a cure has not yet been found.

Parkinson’s is more prevalent than many common cancers – including prostate, breast, colorectal, and lung cancers in Australians over the age of 50.

Parkinson’s is complex, misunderstood in some cases misdiagnosed.

Parkinson’s affects people of all ages. The reality is that 5 Australians under 40 are diagnosed every day.

What can I do to challenge my balance during training?

If you are doing a balance exercise and need to make it more challenging, then try one of the following

-Decrease your base of support (e.g., feet together, one foot in front of the other etc.)
- Controlled movements of centre of mass (e.g., stepping, reaching, squatting, marching, turning etc.)
- No use of arms/hands.

March is the month to do 'The March Charge'

Need a reason to walk? "The March Charge" happens every March and is the perfect reason to set a goal to increase the amount you walk. You get to set your own distance goal for the month and get fit and active.

We all have been touched by cancer either by ourselves, our family or friends. Donations to the Cancer Council have acheived the following:

$51.7M invested into research

664 researchers

309 projects

Investment in research by organisations like the Cancer Council has helped increase the survival rates in cancer patients from 49% in the1980s to 69% in 2023. That's a lot of lives saved!

Not sure how to set some goals around increasing your walking endurance. You can chat to any of the MW2LW physios about tailoring a program for you.

February is Wear Red and Donate Day

February 14th is a day for all romantics, it is filled with red roses and heart shaped chocolates, fluffy toys and cards. But, Heart Research Australia urges you to wear red and donate for someone close to your heart.

Heart disease kills one Australian every 28 minutes.

Keeping your heart healthy, whatever your age, is the most important thing you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease.

By improving your lifestyle, including your diet and level of fitness, you can minimise your risk of getting cardiovascular disease. Even if you have two or more risk factors, you can still make changes that will reduce your chances of developing heart problems. That's where your physio can help, we are specially trained to develop a specific exercise program for any number of health conditions including heart disease.

Exercise is an essential part of healthy living, and vital for effective recovery after any cardiac event. Being inactive is also a risk factor for heart disease.

Unfortunately over half of all Australians aren't getting the recommended amount of physical acitivity.

You can chat to any of the MW2LW physios about tailoring a program for you.

How do I make sure my walking stick or walker are the correct height for me

1. Make sure you are wearing your regular walking shoes

2. Stand up tall and rest your arm straight by your side

3. Get a family member or friend to adjust the height of your stick or walker so that the handle is in line with your wrist

4. Hold the stick or walker at the new height and your elbow should only be slightly bent and your shoulders should be down and relaxed

Our Story

Move Well 2 Live Well was set up by a dedicated Physiotherapist, Danielle Meldrum, who has always had a passion to help improve the lives of the older population. Danielle has worked in various NSW health hospitals, Aged Care facilities and helped set up Rehabilitation Clinics around Australia. Danielle is on the APA Gerontology committee and is a member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association and Parkinsons NSW.

MoveWell 2 LiveWell is a Sydney mobile physiotherapy company who provide clients with a high quality physiotherapy and rehab service in the comfort of their own home. We are extremely passionate about helping older people stay active and independent so they can continue to live in their own homes and avoid going to nursing homes. We help clients when they come out of hospital or when they have had a medical set back and need to regain their mobility, strength and balance. Our main mission is to ensure that everyone can access physiotherapy or rehab no matter what level of function or independence they have. We understand that it is difficult for people to access rehabilitation services due to their level of physical function, their medical condition, and having to depend on others to get them there. That is exactly why we offer a mobile service so that everyone can receive a high quality physiotherapy service.
