The Crochet Room PEI

uldn’t consider myself a creative person. What she wanted me to do with this bag was baffling me. But looking at this beautiful, soft, colourful bag of yarn just sitting there aching to be something amazing sparked something in me. After about a week of walking by this bag, glancing every so often at it, I decided it must be turned into something wonderful. But I didn’t know how to knit, crochet or rug hook. That year was the year of my first visit to a place I now know like the back of my hand: Michaels Arts & Crafts Store. Now, when I visit that store, the cashier’s don’t even ask me my email address, because they already know it. After purchasing a hook and a pattern book I started to teach myself how to crochet. It was a struggle at first, but it was something I found myself enjoying more and more. And after about 4 years of crocheting just blankets my skills increased and I started to branch out in to making other projects: hats, scarves, baby items, etc. Crocheting was relaxing...satisfying...fun! Over the years my stock grew, and as the kids got older they no longer considered it cool to wear Mom’s homemade accessories anymore. I needed a bigger market to cater to. I needed people to be wearing these handmade creations so I could claim back the space they were occupying in my home. Yarn was everywhere! Projects were taking over my home! I was running out of places to hide it all! That was when my husband suggested I get a table at a craft fair. The suggestion was a great idea I thought, but was I good enough that people would pay money for my creations? I wasn’t sure. But I knew that I had to do something with my over-whelming stock. I signed up for a table at one of the biggest craft fairs on the Island hoping that I wasn’t too embarrassed if I had sold nothing. Well, embarrassment was not the feeling I had at the end of the fair. I was flabbergasted. Amazed. Shocked. Surprised. Humbled. People LOVED my stuff! I was so busy the first day that I had to drag my husband with me the next day to help me out. My first craft fair was a huge success! And I loved every minute of it! That was the beginning of the realization that my craft was indeed good enough to make me some extra spending money. And then I was hooked. I took part in as many craft fairs as I could.
