Underground Dance Theatre
Underground Dance Theatre’s productions engage with the heritages of South African Theatre and Dance.
Underground Dance Theatre is a collective of artists exploring new performance styles through progressive, high-quality work situated at the meeting point of physical theatre, contemporary dance and South African dance theatre. The search for original movement dialogue is influenced by the choreographers and performers’ diverse training backgrounds and professional experience across a spectrum of performance genres.
Interested in developing your choreographic technique and physical theatre skills? Underground Dance Theatre's Steven van Wyk will be facilitating two 3 day workshops from 6 - 8 December. Learn, make, grow and discover in the beautiful studios of the Waterfront Theatre School. Book now to secure your spot.
'Monsters and Fossils’ is a new dance work presented by Kristina Johnstone and Thalia Laric in collaboration with lighting designer Andi Colombo. The work uses improvisation structures, somatic investigations, visual distortions and lighting transformations to explore the appearances and disappearances of the body. Through an excavation of the materiality of the body, physical imaginings are created that transcend both representation and identity. At the root of the work is the question – what does it mean to inhabit a body? How can we be more body, how can we be less body?
Performances are on 22 and 23 November at 8pm at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective.
After the performance there will be a curated discussion around research themes connected to the work. We encourage artists and audience to engage in discussion as a way of developing a community of research for new dance.
We'd like to grow the audience for experimental dance work, so please bring a friend if you can.
