Thank you Buxton International Festival for hosting Trilogy Ensemble and for a wonderful day! It was a pleasure to perform for you.
Can't think of a better way to celebrate than a recital with these amazing ladies of Trilogy Ensemble
Celebrating music by composers from Medieval times to today, who happen to be female; composers who wrote for and supported women in music such as ; and rocking out some beautiful new arrangements by ourselves!
A big thanks to the Friends of for hosting us!
Celebrating:
- Hildegard von Bingen, new arrangement of a song celebrating the virgin Mary, Nature and Spring
- Hilary Tann's 'Song of the Amergin'. Inspired by a celtic poem. We've always adored Hilary's music, and were so sad to have heard of her passing last year.
- Rebecca Clarke's jucy harmonies in Danny Boy
- Vivaldi's Trio Sonata arranged by Bethan! Vivaldi composed hundreds of works for the girls at at the orphanage school he taught at in Venice. (Girls stayed longer while boys were sent out to work, so the girls were the highest level performers).
- Mel Bonis' Scenes from the Forest
- Chaminade Concertino - a brilliant performance by Amy of this fiendish flute work with Bethan and Henri rocking out the orchestra!
Our International Women's Day themed project for Buxton International Festival looks at music by many wonderful composers. Many were women writing at a time where they were not accepted in the music profession. - Rebecca Clarke, Mélanie Hélène Bonis and Cécile Chaminade. Several wrote pieces for women to perform - Vivaldi and Rebecca Clarke. And lastly, our Medieval composer Hildegard von Bingen, was a leader in many fields, paving the way for women in many different ways!
Top left moving clockwise
- Rebecca Clarke - violist extraordinaire and among the first women to be accepted into a UK professional orchestra. Known for her amazing melodies and use of folk music - we've arranged a well-known song for the trio from her duet for viola and cello.
- Mélanie Hélène Bonis (Mel): a prolific Parisian Romantic composer who often published under 'Mel Bonis' to make her seem less feminine, at a time where women were not accepted as professionals in the Arts.
- Antonio Vivaldi - Vivaldi composed a huge number of works for his Venetian Orphanage, where girls would stay longer than boys and so became known as the most virtuosic playrs.
- Bethan Griffiths (our very own!). Started off our love of arranging and composing for the trio with her first foray in to Vivaldi's Sonata in A Minor. Henri gets to bounce along as a Baroque Bassoon.
- Cécile Chaminade: our second Parisian composer. She was awarded the Légion d'Honneur, a first for a female composer.
- Hilary Tann. Hilary's beautiful trio 'From the Song of Amergin' is based on an ancient Celtic poem. We were deeply saddened to hear of Hilary's passing last year. We hope to perform her music a lot in the future.
- Hildegarde von Bingen, l. 1098-1179) was a Christian mystic, Benedictine abbess, and polymath proficient in philosophy, musical composition, herbology, medieval literature, cosmology, medicine, biology, theology, and natural history. She refused to be defined by the patriarchal hierarchy of the Church and, although she abided by its strictures, pushed the established boundaries for women. Hildegard is best known for her spiritual concept of Viriditas – “greenness” - the cosmic life force infusing the natural world.
