Updates on Manang Vivian Rosada
On 3 Jan 2024, Vivian was stable and the plan was to wean her off her EDV (drain in the brain) by the end of the week. If successfully weaned, she would be fit to travel back by the following week (target was 12 Jan). The family and employer started the repatriation in parallel in hopes of a successful EDV wean.
Unfortunately, by Friday (5 Jan) she had complications and the EDV was unsuccessfully weaned off. Her next logical option to safely travel was to do another surgery (shunt in the brain) to ensure the drain is not exposed during the flight and can continue, internally, to drain the fluids. This would require her to stay in SG for at least one more month for recovery and observations. Repatriation process was put on hold.
On 10 Jan, a video conference call between doctors, husband and sister and the employer was held to discuss the situation and the family asked for another option to fly her home without another surgery. The doctors advised that it could be done if the EDV was removed just before the flight and put back on as required when she reaches the hospital in Cebu (Option 2). On 12 Jan the family agreed to go with Option 2 as they would want to see Vivian already again. With this, repatriation process would now be restarted and target to fly her out latest by end of next week (19 January).
On 15 January, the doctors found an infection in the EDV area and further investigations were required. Her repatriation process was put on hold (yet again).
Today, 16 Jan, the hospital updated that the source of the infection is on the EDV itself and suggested to do another surgery to change the EDV so that the source can be addressed and then the antibiotics can do their part in healing the infection. However, with this, it is no longer possible to repatriate Vivian via a commercial flight and will require an air ambulance (which initial checks is in the S$55k range).
Our interim hospital bill today is at S$137k and therefore with surgery plus repatriation cost, we're looking at around S$200, 000 for the overall expenses.
There is another video call with the same group tomorrow to finalize this current path forward. If indeed this is what's decided upon then the overall expenses remains as what we've estimated.
Please continue to spread the word and we seek prayers during this time. We surrender everything to the Lord and fully trust in Him during this season.
