Merry Christmas from Moana Roller Derby and friends!

Flashback to last weekend when we had a colour party to celebrate the end of the derby year and hand out some sneaky awards! Bring on 2024! 🌈❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤎

And that's a wrap 🎁 for our first term of Skatefit classes! Thanks to everyone who had a go and supported us on this crazy new adventure but especially to our amazing instructor Twin - you pushed us all to be stronger, fitter and faster 💪💪🛼🛼🤩🤩 Bring on 2024!

Our teamies are superstars on and off the track and this week we are celebrating the success of two our derby whānau: The Don and Skarlie 🤩🤩

Donna popped over to Melbourne this week where she was awarded a National Teaching in Excellence Award. She was nominated by one of the families at her place of work, Elm Tree Early Learning Centre, and was one of 2500 nominations across NZ and Australia. Donna’s colleagues say the award validates what they’ve always known and affirms that she is a truly amazing human and excellent teacher.

Meanwhile Karlie won the Creative Excellence Award at the inaugural Mindful Fashion Circular Design Gala and Exhibition in Auckland. The awards celebrate the best of emerging talent in sustainable fashion design. Karlie’s design, No Virgins Allowed, deconstructs and reconstructs end of life denim. The judges noted this outfit was fully resolved, showed original creativity in its innovative use of waste denim and showed an inclusive design function and aesthetic.

It was back to Taupō for some of our crew at the weekend to join our friends from Sulphur City Steam Rollers, Taupo Roller Derby League - Huka Dolls and Hellmilton Roller Ghouls for a development came against Auckland Roller Derby League (ARDL). It's always lots of fun, thanks for having us. And congratulations to Moana's Mace for taking out MVB!! Two weeks in a row - whoop whoop 🤩🤩

Congratulations to our superstar freshies who made their derby debut yesterday - Aly-gate-her and Mer-minator! 🐊 🧜‍♀️ 🛼🛼 You were amazing and we are all so proud. They also took away an MVJ award each and rookie Mace an MVB 🏆🏆🏆
Thanks to our new friends and teamies Northland Roller Derby and Kapiti Coast Derby Crew we had a blast! And massive shout out to Taupo Roller Derby League - Huka Dolls for hosting.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our Freshie Scrimmage we had scheduled for the 27th of October as we have just been notified we've lost our venue booking at the QEYC to a Volleyball Tournament (even though we have had this booked in at the start of the year!!).

We are beyond frustrated and dissapointed as this was going to be an awesome opportunity for all you Freshies out there!

We're super proud of our chairperson and head coach Her Madjessty who was selected to play with Sulphur City Steam Rollers' Motley Crew at Tropicarnage Cup 2023 in Australia this weekend! 🤩🤩🤩

This scrimmage is all about learning, getting use to the chaos on the track and boosting your confidence so you feel prepared for your first game! There will be some experienced players on the track and on the sidelines to help support and guide you.

THE DETAILS:
7.45pm meet in the foyer at QEYC to gear up
8.00pm group warm up on track
8.15pm split into teams
8.20pm Scrim start
8.50pm short half time break
8.55pm Second half start
9.20pm End of scrimmage and mandatory derby photo 😆📸
9.25pm Cool down/stretch & gear down
9.30pm Exit venue - meet up for food/drink after if any peeps are keen?

These classes are an awesome mixture of fitness drills and strength exercises - and it's all done on roller skates, so its waaaaay more fun!! 😅🤩
Open to all, 16 years and older. You must have a basic level of skating ability to participate (be able to stand up and skate/roll with some confidence, without assistance). You will also need your own skates and protective gear.

What an amazing day of derby! Moana hit the road yesterday to join Sulphur City Steam Rollers for their triple header in Taupō. Her Madjessty played for Motley Crüe against DD - Dunedin Derby’s Gallow Lasses while The Artful Dodge-HER, Mace and Kiss My Arfa took to the track for Sulphur in their development game against Fun-vitational with Taupo Roller Derby League - Huka Dolls et al 🍒💥

What a great night for a street skate! We didn't have our training venue last night so our new skaters had an outdoor lesson then some of us checked out the new(ish) cycle paths on Totara St.
