More than 3000 cases of microcephalies in Brazil alone since the beginning of the outbreak from last year.

Caught off-guard by Zika, Brazil struggles with deformed babies Angela Rocha, a pediatrician in northeastern Brazil, measures the head of a child born with microcephaly, a tragic neurological complication linked to Zika, the mosquito-borne virus sparking a health scare across the Americas.
Zika virus , first discovered in Uganda in the 1940 s is now here in the reagion, with confirmed cases in Samoa and in Tonga .
From the family of Flaviviridae virus. , Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the same vectors for dengue and chikungunya.
Though fatalities are rare, cases of Guillain Barre syndrome have been reported following suspected Zika virus infection.
More distressing though are the cases of microcephalies seen in the neonates of zika infected mothers. Cases are surging and Brazil is still reeling from this epidemic.
