For the 7th year, the "CHILL 'n' ROCK AT CHRISTMAS" playlist is BACK online with an updated 2023 release: https://smarturl.it/ChillnShivrChristmas ( also available on our bio webpage: https://bio.to/chill-n-shivr ). 16 NEW songs this year in a playlist of 180 tracks now available on Spotify, Deezer, youTube, AmazonMusic (176 songs only) and SoundCloud (158 songs only).

Over the time, the playlist has changed from being a Christmas playlist to becoming a playlist for Christmastime. The difference is that now it tells a story and accompanies you through December to Christmas day and even to New Year's day and the whole winter. The order of the songs in the playlist is specially organized to make you live the several chapters of this story and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Christmas... so don't play the songs in shuffle mode and follow the magic thread through the lyrics and the music.

Before we follow through with the story, let us remind you that a very selective choice of songs has been made over the years! It includes only good folk, rock & blues, performed by true singers and songwriters, performing mostly with "real" instruments!... also, no crooners, no oldies, and no basic pop, usually played non-stop in supermarkets! So, if they still ask you for Christmas songs, this playlist is your best alternative when you want to go on listening to good music during Christmastime.

Coming back to the story, you must realize that Christmastime is a very rich period in terms of atmospheres, environments, inspirations... So, while you begin to listen to the playlist in early December, we’ll set the scene in terms of atmospheres: the cold weather of the early winter, the scenery of snow, dim lights, the scent of the burning wood in the fireplace, the flavors of slow cooked meals, the warm drinks…

Also, on the emotional level, joy, sadness, blues, nostalgia... all emotions are exacerbated by the intensity of the expectations at all levels from the material to the spiritual, including all sentimental conditions from family to friendship and loving relationships. While the idealistic scenery can be easily pictured to stimulate joy and family gathering, it contributes also to exacerbate the sadness or blues of the people living in or going through bad conditions at this period of time as they not only suffer from their difficulties but must also bear the amplitude of the difference with the expectations of the period which highlight their poor situation.

So, to begin the story, we decided this year to remind us all of the need for fraternity in this period of time when some people only think that they have first to "make it through" December. The first song is really a find, a musical nugget, with the smoky voice of the acclaimed Canadian vocalist Holly Cole and her unique cover of the song "If we make it through December". She performs it on very different lines compared to the country music original style by Merle Haggard. The song resonates like a sad self motivation while the lyrics go on with "everything’s gonna be alright I know". Also the very nice instrumental backing with piano and flugelhorn highlights the bluesy atmosphere.

As the first song touched our heart, we immediately follow with an inspiring performance by Mary Chapin Carpenter of the song "On A Quiet Christmas Morn". Her deep voice penetrates our whole body to remind us of the blessing coming with this period as it is so nicely highlighted in the lyrics by Robin and Linda Williams : "The hardest heart is softened by the blessing that was born, when the gift of grace was offered on a quiet Christmas morn"!

Whatever the inspiration, we should not forget the warmth of human relations, especially in a period of cold weather, and the joy to gather with friends in a cozy environment to have a warm drink that gives you the "taste" of Christmas, like a "Hot Buttered Rum" (Krista Detor). Then while "The Whole World Waits for Christmas" (Delta Rae), even nature seems to put on its own sacred decorations like "The Holly and The Ivy" (Tow'rs) infused with spiritual symbolism as they stay green in winter. "The holly bears a berry, As red as any blood, And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ Embodied humble love" says the song. Actually, while the Holly represents Jesus and the Ivy represents Virgin Mary in the traditional Christmas carol, it is also nice to know this Christmas tale from the 4th century, explaining that the bush tree was blessed after hiding Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus, and protecting them from King Herod’s soldiers. Since that episode when it protected the holy family, the ilex would have become the Holly, an evergreen, and earned his needles on the leaves and the red berries. You can read the tale here: https://www.appalachianhistory.net/2016/12/the-holly-tree-a-4th-century-christmas-tale.html

As mentioned earlier, conflicting emotions may be rushing through your mind in December while you must be "Getting Ready for Christmas Day" (Paul Simon) all the while you feel the need to be positively moved by the spirit of this time of the year. Maybe, look at the sky at night and imagine what it must have been to see this "Star in the East" (Cassie and Maggie) as the sign that a holy baby was born. Speaking of the song, you should watch their youTube video (in the youTube playlist) on how these enchanting Canadian sisters from Nova Scotia perform in the snow with a fiddle and a guitar as they offer us their unique blend of traditional and contemporary Celtic instrumental and vocal compositions. Listening to this quite rhythmic and rather modern performance, it is all the more so astounding when you discover later that the lyrics of the song "Star in the East" come from a Christian hymn written in 1811 by the Anglican bishop Reginald Heber under the name "Brightest and Best".

Anyway, while you watch the stars, take the opportunity to think over the "Peace on Earth". You can even simultaneously play this very inspiring rendition of the song of the same name by Lissie, with a really moving crescendo followed by a quite soft landing.

Then let the various feelings pervade, bringing back to life the joy of Christmas as you want it. The joy of "You and Me and Christmastime" (Sheffield Music) or the joy of the Holiday as you would dream of it to be, "A Dreamer’s Holiday" (Willie Nelson). Why not let us expect for the best this year, as the great Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith would say in his song "Maybe This Christmas" nicely performed (by himself, later in the playlist) here by Leigh Bingham Nash:

"Maybe this Christmas will mean something more
Maybe this year Love will appear
Deeper than ever before
And maybe forgiveness will ask us to call
Someone we love
Someone we’ve lost
For reasons we can’t quite recall"

Then let the season infuse and feel the best of the early winter with songs like "This time in December" (Matt Duncan), "Winter Eclipse" (Beta Radio), "Winter Moon" (Mindy Gledhill) and "White Winter Hymnal" (Birdy). Without a doubt, together with this wintery atmosphere, a kind of feeling of blues will also rise and it will be the time to let the sadness or even the few things that might exasperate you, enter in the party as they are knocking at your backdoor as a souvenir. Why not first look at it with humor like JD McPherson and his "Ugly Sweater Blues". Now, if your loved one left, it could be harder… Still, listen to these songs involving love stories that have ended and come back to mind at Christmastime, and even if they bring on the blues, they can also give you some hope: "Everything is cool" (John Prine) and "It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way" (Jim Croce).

Now we have a little gift for our friends in New York City this year as we gathered four songs about Winter and Christmas in the city early in the playlist: "Fairytale of New York" (Pogues, Kirsty MacColl), "First Snow On Brooklyn" (Jethro Tull), "Christmas in New York" (Rodney Crowell) and "A Hazy Shade of Winter" (Simon & Garfunkel).

As you probably noticed, this post is already quite long and we have only introduced the first 22 songs of the playlist (180 songs). Actually, we only launched, it is now your turn to take the trip and follow the thread of the story of Christmastime.
For the ones who are followers of this playlist or just listened to it in the past years, here are the 16 new songs in 2023, placed all over the playlist depending on their own story: "If We Make It Through December" by Holly Cole (1rst song). The great Mary Chapin Carpenter makes a remarkable entry in the playlist with 3 songs: "On A Quiet Christmas Morn" (rank 2nd in the playlist), "Come Darkness, Come Light" & "New Years Day". "The Whole World Waits for Christmas Morning" by Delta Rae. Tow'rs comes in with 2 songs: "The Holly & the Ivy" & "Lo How a Rose Is Blooming". "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" by Caveboy. Two versions of "Auld Lang Syne": One by Betsy Phillips & Robby Hecht and the other by Andrew Bird. "It's the Holidays (Let's Celebrate)" by 3 One Oh. "Coming Home For Christmas" by Forest Blakk. The great Amy Winehouse sings live "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". "I Caught a Snowflake" by gina & Jeremie Peters. "You to Me" by Dave Barnes and "Maybe Next Year" by Jenny Owen Youngs.

Do not hesitate to make your own comments about the songs in the playlist, including stories related to them.
Now if you want to have a better idea of the singers (mostly singer-songwriters) involved in the playlist, first take a look at some of the most famous ones: Al Green, Amy Winehouse, Andrew Bird, Annie Lennox, Bahamas, Beth Hart, Birdy, Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes, Bruce Cockburn, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Dolly Parton, Eagles, Eels, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Fleet Foxes, Forest Blakk, Harry Nilsson, Jack Johnson, Jeff Beck, JessieJ, Jethro Tull, Jim Croce, Joe Bonamassa, John Lennon, John Prine, John Travolta, Johnny Cash, Katie Melua, Keith Urban, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Patti Smith, Paul Simon, Queen, Rodney Crowell, Ron Sexsmith, Rosanne Cash, Sara Bareilles, Simon & Garfunkel, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Stevie Nicks, The Head and The Heart, The Kinks, The Pogues, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Willie Nelson... and more...

Still, it also includes many true musical nuggets like: Alan Bernhoft Beatlesque Music, Andrea von Kampen, BEGINNERS, Beta Radio, Betsy Philips, Caroline Pennell, Carroll Roberson, Cassie & Maggie, Caveboy, Charla Peterson, Chuck Brown, Daniela Andrade, Dave Barnes, Delta Rae, Eva Cassidy, Freedom Fry, Gabrielle Aplin, Great Lake Swimmers, Grizfolk, Handsome and Gretyl, Hannah Grace, Holly Cole, Jamie Cullum, JD McPherson, Jenny Owen Youngs, John Popper, Jonny Lang, Joshua Hyslop, Krista Detor, Leigh Nash, Lisa Hannigan, Lissie, Matt Duncan, Meiko, Michael Burks, Mindy Gledhill, Over the Rhine, Paula Fuga, Relient K, Sheffield, Sufjan Stevens, The Last Bison, The Okee Dokee Brothers, 3 One Oh, Tow’rs, Vulfpeck, Zack Rogue, Zee Avi

Enough reading, try this "Chill'n'Rock at Christmas" playlist now on Spotify, Deezer, YouTube, Amazon Music or SoundCloud! Choose on this next page: http://smarturl.it/ChillnShivrChristmas

By the way, do not forget it is an "ephemeral" playlist: it is only available before Christmas and during Winter time (it will melt away with the first rays of the Spring sun) and in the South Hemisphere on the contrary, it is available in Summer (and disappear like the tree leaves in autumn)

May you all have a very happy Christmas, chilling out and Rocking!

For the 6th year, the "CHILL 'n' ROCK AT CHRISTMAS" playlist is BACK online with an updated 2022 release: https://smarturl.it/ChillnShivrChristmas ( also available on our new bio webpage: https://bio.to/chill-n-shivr )
15 NEW songs this year in a playlist of 165 tracks now. Very selective choice made over the years! It includes only good folk, rock & blues, performed by true singers and songwriters, performing mostly with "real" instruments!... also, no crooners, no oldies, and no basic pop, usually played non-stop in supermarkets!

This playlist is your BEST alternative if you're looking for GOOD MUSIC during Christmastime (Don’t they ask you for Christmas songs?!)

While it has always been available on Spotify & Deezer (audio tracks) or youTube (videos) in previous years, not only it continues with the same services this year but is now also on Amazon Music (157 tracks) and SoundCloud (143 tracks) in slightly reduced versions due to unavailability of some songs on these services.
First click this link https://smarturl.it/ChillnShivrChristmas and choose which streaming service you want to use.

So, what is different with this playlist compared to other traditional Christmas playlists. Actually, we thought that every year at Christmas time you have to listen to these traditional crooners singing Christmas songs, or the same oldies (as great as they are) or even all those pop stars constantly played in supermarkets! You might be fed up with those songs and now you want to listen to "good" music, not really Christmas music!... but hey, you're not alone and they might still ask you for Christmas songs. So, why not get the best out of it! Christmas songs and good music, all in one!... and no need to mess around with this musical quest... actually, we have done it for you over the last 6 years, picking one by one some Christmas music gems, we mean with great lyrics and real good vocals backed with truly instrumental music, even in cases of covers of famous traditional Christmas songs! A mix of chilling out and rocking with Rock, Blues and Folk music!

One advice only: when listening for the first time, do not use shuffle mode. The reason for listening to it from the first track to the last is that there is a chronology regarding the themes of the songs and the periods in the season. Also we have been working on the musical transitions from song to song.

Regarding the timeline, early songs in the playlist for instance have more reference to Christmastime in the days and weeks leading up to Christmas, when the "tastes" of Christmas warm you up in every sense of the words ("Hot Buttered Rum" by Krista Detor) and you try to get ready for the Day ("Getting Ready for Christmas Day" by Paul Simon), the memories coming back ("You and Me and Christmastime" by Sheffield) or you just imagine in a beatlesque way ("Imagine Christmas" by Alan Bernhoft) and you feel the spirit of this time of year ("Star In The East" by Cassie and Maggie; "Peace on Earth" by Lissie; "Maybe this Christmas" by Leigh Bingham Nash and Ron Sexsmith, cover and original, both in the playlist).

Another aspect of Christmastime is the early winter ("Winter Eclipse" by Beta Radio; "Winter Time (Be A Little Closer)" by ALO; "Winter Moon" by Mindy Gledhill; "In The Bleak Midwinter" by Gabrielle Aplin & Hannah Grace; "Winter's Night" by Joshua Hyslop... etc), also the month of December ("This time in December" by Matt Duncan; "December Song" by Birdtalker & Joy Williams; "December" by Norah Jones) and the first snows and wood fires in the fireplace or stove ("Blankets of Snow" by The Okee Dokee Brothers; "First Snow On Brooklyn" by Jethro Tull; "Snow" by Lisa Hannigan; "Winter, Fire and Snow" by Charla Peterson Music; "Old Fashioned Holiday" by Andrea von Kampen; Christmas Snow" by Michael Burks). By the way, on youTube, there are nice official videos for some of those songs adding some contextual images to the lyrics and the music.

Then comes the holiday period ("Dreamer's Holiday" by Willie Nelson) and people being in a frenzy of anticipation ("Christmas Everywhere" by Rodney Crowell; "Hang Your Lights" by Jamie Cullum; "Hang a String of Lights" by Great Lake Swimmers) or in a state of blues and loneliness ("Ugly Sweater Blues" by JD McPherson; "Everything is Cool" by John Prine; "It Doesn't Have To Be That Way" by Jim Croce; "Christmas Blues" by John Popper & The Duskray Troubadours & Eric Clapton; "Winter Swell Blues" by Paula Fuga; "Christmas Blues A' Comin'" by Dan Crary... etc). Anyway, it is also time to make your wishes, even if you only have one wish ("My Only Wish" by BEGINNERS ; "All I Want For Christmas is a Rock Show" by Grizfolk feat. Kyle Gass; "All the Gifts I Need" by JD McPherson).

Only then come the many songs for Christmas Eve and Christmas day (like "Deck the Halls" by Native World; "Merry Merry Christmas" by Handsome and Gretyl; "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Daniela Andrade; "Merry Christmas Baby" by Bruce Springsteen; "Go Tell It On The Mountain" by Dolly Parton; "O Holy Night" by Katie Melua; "Frosty The Snowman" by Zee Avi, "Blue Christmas" by Johnny Cash; "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Caroline Pennell alias Carol Ades; "Deck The Hall With Boogie Woogie" by Katie Webster at Alligator Records, "Winter Wonderland" by Bob Dylan... and many more!)- followed by the unequal feelings after Christmas ("Next Christmas" by Freedom Fry, "Stay A Little Longer Santa" by Shemekia Copeland, "That Was The Worst Christmas Ever" by Sufjan Stevens; "Everyday Can Be Just Like Christmas" by Carroll Roberson) ending the playlist with New Year's Eve and New Year. The last song is actually a 2021 addition called "New Year Just With You" by Gabe Dixon.

Anyway, this gives only a small idea of the playlist cause it contains 165 songs (9 hr 20 m)! Best is to give it a try and listen to it !

All actually began in 2017 with a first playlist of 50 songs, improved it 2018 (to 80 songs) then adding again 20 more songs on Dec. 1st 2019, reaching a top of 100 tracks to which were added 10 bonus tracks just before Christmas totalling 110 songs that year. In 2020 we added one song every day during the advent period ending the year with a playlist of 134 tracks. Then 16 added songs in 2021 resulted in a playlist of 150 tracks last year.

For the ones who are followers of this playlist or just listened to it in the past years, here are the details of the 15 new songs that we added in 2022 (in the order of their appearance in the playlist; singers are already tagged above): "Hot Buttered Rum" (Krista Detor), "Getting Ready for Christmas Day" (Paul Simon), "Imagine Christmas" (Alan Bernhoft), "This Time in December" (Matt Duncan), "Ugly Sweater Blues" & "All The Gifts I Need" (JD McPherson), "Everything Is Cool" (John Prine), "Blankets of Snow" (The Okee Dokee Brothers), "Hang Your Lights" (Jamie Cullum), "Old Fashioned Holiday" (Andrea von Kampen), "My Only Wish" (BEGINNERS), "All I Want for Christmas Is a Rock Show" (Grizfolk, Kyle Gass), "Winter, Fire, and Snow" (Charla Peterson), "Hang a String of Lights" (Great Lake Swimmers) and "Deck The Halls" (The Last Bison).

On youTube, there are four exclusive bonus videos at the end of the playlist in addition to the 165 songs. Please read the last part of the introduction text to the playlist on youTube if you want some details on these videos and why we added them.

Now if you want to have a better idea of the singers (mostly singer-songwriters) involved in the playlist, first take a look at some of the most famous ones: Al Green, Annie Lennox, Bahamas, Beth Hart, Birdy, Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes, Bruce Cockburn, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Dolly Parton, Eagles, Eels, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Fleet Foxes, Harry Nilsson, Jack Johnson, Jeff Beck, JessieJ, Jethro Tull, Jim Croce, Joe Bonamassa, John Lennon, John Prine, John Travolta, Johnny Cash, Katie Melua, Keith Urban, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Norah Jones, Patti Smith, Paul Simon, Queen, Rodney Crowell, Ron Sexsmith, Rosanne Cash, Sara Bareilles, Simon & Garfunkel, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Stevie Nicks, The Head and The Heart, The Kinks, The Pogues, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Willie Nelson... and more...

Still, it also includes many true musical nuggets like: Alan Bernhoft, Andrea von Kampen, BEGINNERS, Beta Radio, Caroline Pennell, Carroll Roberson, Cassie & Maggie, Charla Peterson, Chuck Brown, Daniela Andrade, Eva Cassidy, Freedom Fry, Gabrielle Aplin, Great Lake Swimmers, Grizfolk, Handsome and Gretyl, Hannah Grace, Jamie Cullum, JD McPherson, John Popper, Jonny Lang, Joshua Hyslop, Krista Detor, Leigh Nash, Lisa Hannigan, Lissie, Matt Duncan, Meiko, Michael Burks, Mindy Gledhill, Over the Rhine, Paula Fuga, Relient K, Sheffield, Sufjan Stevens, The Last Bison, The Okee Dokee Brothers, Vulfpeck, Zack Rogue, Zee Avi

You don't need to wait 'till Christmas day... It's good music anyway! Try this "Chill'n'Rock at Christmas" playlist now on Spotify, Deezer, YouTube, Amazon Music or SoundCloud! Choose on this next page: http://smarturl.it/ChillnShivrChristmas

By the way, do not forget it is an "ephemeral" playlist: it is only available before Christmas and during Winter time (it will melt away with the first rays of the Spring sun) (and in the South Hemisphere on the contrary, it is available in Summer and disappear like the tree leaves in autumn)!
