Dr. Matthew Dernbach, a psychiatrist and current fellow in the Medical Toxicology Fellowship worked with the Tox team and the Georgia Poison Center (GPC) to create an initiative to help Georgians that call into the GPC experiencing a mental health crisis.
Dr. Dernbach said, “The new protocol for mental health crises demonstrates how university, city, state, and federal resources can all collaborate to help the people of Georgia.”
The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Georgia Crisis and Access Line & 988, Georgia Emergency Communications Authority & 911, City of Atlanta 911, Emory University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Emory University Department of Emergency Medicine’s Medical Toxicology Fellowship all came together to develop this new alliance and protocol for people experiencing a mental health crisis.

For the first time in , Grady EMS is now able to give whole blood transfusions in the ambulance on the way to the ED.
Dr. Lekshmi Kumar, Associate Professor and Medical Director of Grady EMS, said, “In trauma patients with significant blood loss, prehospital blood transfusion bridges the critical gap between injury and definitive care to restore perfusion and oxygenation. Donate blood, give the gift of life."
