Undergraduate Research Week 2024 - Jessica Persano 04/06/2024

Jessica Persano of Ignite at UCLA is conducting research to identify barriers to accessing post-s*xual-assault care for UCLA students with disabilities. More research is needed to understand the experience of UC student survivors with disabilities who seek post-s*xual-assault services, how existing barriers can be reduced and what kinds of support survivors envision in their pursuit of healing and justice.

Multiple Colleges Offer Medication Abortion Services. Students Say They Don’t Know About It. 29/03/2024

With Senate Bill 24, introduced in 2019, California became the first state to require its public universities to provide medication abortion on campus. By January 1, 2023, all University of California and California State University schools were required to provide on-site medication abortion services, but students overwhelmingly aren’t aware they have this access, due to a lack of publicity and awareness efforts on the part of the schools.

Multiple Colleges Offer Medication Abortion Services. Students Say They Don’t Know About It. As medication abortion is at risk before SCOTUS, California may offer a cautionary tale for Massachusetts and New York.

Adderall misuse down, but ma*****na is up 02/03/2022

We know use of alcohol other illicit substances is associated with increased risk for s*xual violence, including among students. According to this article, use of Adderall (once a popular “study drug”) has declined on college campuses since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, experts are still worried—especially since consumption of ma*****na and alcohol are up. What are you seeing on your campuses?

ED Act Now 07/10/2021

Students are about to enter a double redzone where more than 50% of all s*xual assaults will occur between the day first year students arrive on campus until the day students depart for Thanksgiving Break. This fall, with schools shifting from remote learning back to in-person classes, experts predict that sophomores - who have not yet stepped on campus - will experience college as freshmen do, which means that the population of those at risk will double.

ED Act Now The Biden administration announced plans to undo the Trump Administration’s attack on student survivors and create a Title IX rule that supports the rights of all students. The not-so-good news? The Department of Education plans to release those changes in May 2022 –– nearly a year from now.

A different path for confronting s*xual assault - Impact Justice As a survivor of child s*xual abuse, s*xual assault, and r**e, I’ve often wondered what justice would look like for the s*xual violence I’ve endured. I, like professor Christine Blasey Ford and the vast majority of survivors, never reported any of the men who violated me.

Taking Action in Campus Sexual Assault Prevention Efforts

Sexual assault and intimate partner violence are prevalent on college campuses throughout California and the U.S. Students exposed to violence are less likely to achieve full health and well-being, during college and beyond. College campuses should be environments that foster health, promote safety, and prevent relationship violence before it occurs. College campuses should advance students, not hinder their potential for success.

We recognize the high prevalence of unhealthy relationships and dating violence among college-aged women, LGBTQ+ folks, and vulnerable populations. Despite such evidence, college students face missing links between their experiences and the campus resources and policies intended to support them.
