Starting off our series of cases discussing standout cases from surgeons across the globe. In this week’s episode we are reviewing a case discussed with us by Professor Chris Lavy. A stalwart in global surgery. He is an orthopaedic surgeon who has been instrumental in setting up the College of Surgeons of East and Southern Africa (COSECSA), the Oxford Global Surgery group and recently built the CURE children’s hospital of Zimbabwe. He discusses a case from much earlier in his career where context made a big difference to his differential diagnosis.
PS we are only joking about reviewing your qualifications Professor Lavy :)😅 Links in bio 🙏🏾

In this first episode of season 3 first recorded on the 21st of December 2020, with all 4 members of the team are present for the very first time as they discuss the way the covid-19 virus has affected their lives. We have a chance to compare the response at that point when many countries in the world were about to enter a second wave and very few countries had started rolling out vaccines where as now most countries around the world have at least some access to vaccines (debatable). Sit back and relax as the team takes a look back at the year that was 2020 #2020

Rounding off our team introductions with our second co-founder - Dr Farai Chigumadzi.
“Medicine was not my first choice career, or even my second or third choice. The fact that I got into medicine, yet alone finished is testament to the fact that there are higher powers above us pulling the strings. Nonetheless, now that I am in this position I feel that myself and everyone like me should be doing all they can to improve the health and well being of those around us. This podcast hopefully being one of many potentials tools in which we can do that.”

24/04/2021

We now to bring you to one of the originals and one of our co-founders - Dr Efosa Ohonba.
I consider myself a global citizen who's passionate about people. I'm currently working as a community service medical officer in South Africa . I have a keen interest in neurosurgery. I believe the brain is just beautiful firstly in the way it works and also in its appearance although some might call it ugly with all its folds and wrinkles ( lol) . I also have an interest in global surgery because I believe a timely life altering surgical intervention should be available to all who need it when they need it . I strive for everything I do to reflect excellence humility and kindness. Outside of medicine my time is spread across spending time with family and friends , watching and playing sports ( I can watch almost anything that can be called a sport ), spending time in nature and dabbling in the arts.

Next up in our meet the team series, straight from the UK, Dr Krithi Ravi. “I am an Academic Foundation Doctor, working in Southampton, UK. My research and advocacy efforts focus on understanding and addressing health disparities locally and globally. This interest has developed from my experiences of navigating health systems as a first generation immigrant, my work as a junior doctor in the National Health Service, my involvement global surgery advocacy as a committee member of the Global Anaesthesia, Surgery and Obstetric Collaborative in the UK, and my participation in the Oxford Refugee Health Initiative. I am grateful for the opportunities to learn and think about health inequity with my colleagues in the 15 Minute Medicine team.”

22/04/2021

We thought you might like to get to know our team. First up we have Dr Nicholas Mutanda Musoke. “ I am a young doctor with a passion for gaming and a special interest in patient education. I don't do many, if any, of the academic podcasts because I take greater pleasure debating while unprepared and playing devil's advocate. I believe the profession is there for the taking if young people with strong enough opinions and a dedicated work ethic apply themselves for the better of each other and our patients. As emotionally taxing as the field may be, the little bit of good we do goes a long way in improving the life of the strangers we meet along the way and that in itself, is good for the soul."
