One week of Preparations! What’s one of your travel or hosting preparation rituals? This week, I leaned into an age old family tradition and miscommunicated my arrival date, so that when I texted my mum to say I had landed, she was absolutely thrown for a loop!

Just over a year ago I was buying groceries and washing linens in preparation for a visit with my sister. When I thought of her at home, booking time off work and filling up her suitcase, I was struck by the quiet but profound meaning that runs through these actions. So many mundane tasks, all building up to a precious chance to share just a mite of time.

And so I wrote a duet, and asked my dear friend Nimaya to sing it with me.

Last year we had the pleasure of performing as guest musicians for a few classes at SAE. We are now delighted to share these live performances as a mini EP! The project includes an all-new original song, “Icarus”, an acoustic version of “Breathless”, and a cover of one of our favourite songs, “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. It is with sadness and well-wishes that we announce Victoria Carbol’s departure from Strange Tides. The band will carry on spearheaded by Kirsten Bale, while Victoria will be stepping aside due to personal reasons. We hope you will continue to support this folk-rock explosion as it moves into this new phase. Backed by FACTOR, a new EP is in the works, as well as a few upcoming releases that constitute Victoria’s final projects with the band. We want to thank everyone who has supported the act this far, who has streamed, bought tickets, given us rides, worked on our music, taken photos, or in any way contributed to the blast these last 3.5 years have been. We hope you will continue to support the new Strange Tides going forward.

We are thrilled to announce our second Artist Development Grant. In our first grant year we were able to put out our debut EP, so we can’t wait to show you what this next year will hold. Thank you so much to FACTOR for the award, to for writing our grant, to .photography for this great photo, and to all of you who have been expectantly awaiting new music! We are stoked that this marks one step closer to delivering it to you. Watch for BTS clips as we jump back into to work with on this new project. 🥰⁠

We are heading into the studio this weekend to record for the first time in a year! “Criminal” was our angriest song; this new one we consider its sort of B-side, the internal wrestling that occurs in the aftermath of suffering, when the anger has faded and you’re left questioning whether you’re to blame (the conclusion: you’re not).

The perfect duet partner for someone as lazy as Victoria. KB is the heart of Strange Tides and the skill behind our music. As you know, we’re participating in CBC Music’s Toyota Searchlight contest this year. (On that note, click here to vote for us today: https://www.cbc.ca/music/searchlight/ #/vote/strange-tides. You can vote daily to help us get selected into the top 100.) We chose to enter our debut single, “Criminal”, as it is deeply personal to both of us and has a message we hope will resonate with listeners. Candid and autobiographical, “Criminal” is a response to the judgment and rejection we both encountered at our former church. As a q***r Christian, Victoria’s contributions are about her experience of falling in love with a woman for the first time and the consequential ostracization she experienced when the church was informed. For Kirsten, “Criminal” is an expression of her frustration that the church’s permission to question elements of theology or religious culture was contingent upon her reaching “correct” conclusions. In summary, “Criminal” grew out the anger that accompanies disillusionment. We both believed we were participating in a community of curiosity and empathy, but instead were met with fear and judgment. “Criminal” is a protest against those who would use their authority to control the people in their care, and (we hope) is an anthem of solidarity for those who have been similarly suppressed.
