Ductwork is a vital part of the hvac system. When installing,all ductwork needs to be suspended per code. It provides multiple benefits:

(1) Suspending ductwork as straight as possible with a smooth radius, minimizes turbulence and maximizes airflow. Having sharp bends or sags impedes airflow.

(2) Ductwork laying on the attic floor has a higher probability of condensation between the bottom side of duct and attic floor. Not to mention it increases the chances of being stepped on or crushed by anyone preforming any work in the attic.

(3) Sealing ductwork at all connections helps systems efficiency and reduces air leaks. You want to eliminate conditioned air mixing with attic air and minimize the chances of having potential microbial growth.
