Huon Cricket Association History
A record of the Huon Cricket Association and the clubs involved. This page will contain any number of historical items that might be worth a look!
The Huon Cricket Association was formed in 1896, and continued through until 2004, when attrition of clubs produced a merger with the Channel Cricket Association. At its peak after WW2, it commanded 12 first grade clubs, but rationalisation saw this dwindle down until just 4 1s Grade clubs remained for the 2003-04 season.

The Huonville Cricket Club made it 2 from 3, running over Slab Road in the first innings on the back of 6-36 from Perry Lovell.
Able to defend the meagre total set of 161, Huonville then batted again, with Smokey Allen with 104* ensuring there would be no come back from Slab Road.

Glen Huon again made it to the B Grade final, but 119 from Phillip Rowe in the second innings saw the spoils go to Geeveston/Castle Forbes Bay - score card available here:

The 1975-76 season saw Ranelagh Grove take on a newly combined Geeveston/Castle Forbes Bay side which had defeated Ranelagh Grove on each of the seasons previous clashes.
Geeveston/Castle Forbes Bay had progressed straight to the Grand Final with victory over Slab Road, while Ranelagh Grove had to go past Glen and then Slab.
George Carr, Ray Armstrong Snr and Ray Armstrong Jnr had been the stand outs for Geeveston/Castles over the year, whilst Ranelagh Grove came through on the back of Adrian Stevensons bowling through the finals series.
Batting first, it was the batting of Gary Cordwell and Paul Harriss that set up the game for Ranelagh Grove, Cordwell scoring 128 and Harriss 72 as the team piled on 323.
George Carr and Dennis Darcy put on 104 for the first wicket to set Geeveston/Castle's up, but the breakthrough to Adrian Stevenson of Carr for 54 saw a steady stream of wickets begin to fall, eventually being all out for 234, and Ranelagh Grove picking up their first flag as a combined entity.
Stevenson took 4-59, while Paul and Bruce Harriss both took 3 wickets.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Grove Cricket Player Brian Richardson.
Brian was a very accomplished cricketer, representing Tasmania as well as a number of CTPL Clubs, and was instrumental in steering the Grove Cricket Club to the 1957-58 HCA A Grade Premiership. In his time at Grove, he scored 2096 runs at an average of 95.27, including 4 hundreds and 2 double hundreds.
Brian also currently holds the highest (known of) individual score in the HCA, scoring 275 against Glen Huon on Feb 16, 1957.
Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tasmanian cricket legend, Brian Richardson. 🏏
Brian was a first class cricketer for Tasmania. He played CTPL cricket with Kingborough, North Hobart, Glenorchy and University.
The right-hand batsman played 269 games in Tasmania, scoring an incredible 9,612 runs over his playing career.
He was inducted into the CTPL hall of fame in 2016/17.
Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
The 1974-75 season saw Huonville again feature in the Grand Final, being the dominant side of the year.
They faced Glen Huon, newly promoted from B Grade the previous year, and with some additional players from Judbury going into recess.
Glen Huon had played Slab Road twice in the Prelim Final - the first being a tie.
Batting first, Huonville piled on the runs - Jimmy James (68), Viv Lovell (100) and Smokey Allen (154) all big run scorers - Huonville at one stage 2-323 on the way to a total of 496.
Stan Clark battled hard for Glen Huon with an unbeaten 84, but the total was too large, Huonville running away with their first flag since 1963-64

Glen Huon did have some compensation, making it back to back in B Grade, overcoming Dover on the back of Plover Clark's 5 wickets.
Plover came home with a wet sail, taking 7-75, 5-15, and 5-66 in the last 3 games of the year.

1973-74 saw Slab Road triumph for their 4th flag in 7 years since joining the HCA.
They booked their ticket to the GF with a win over last season premiers Castle Forbes Bay in the 2nd Semi, and took on Ranelagh-Grove in the first year of the 2 clubs combining.
Ranelagh Grove had gone through Huonville and Castles to reach the final, but despite a late order 76 from Ashley Lorkin, couldnt chase down the total of 224 set by Slab on the back of 64 from Kerry Dillon.
Laurie Jarrett with 5 wickets was the star with the ball.

In B Grade, Glen Huon overturned the Semi Final result against Judbury to run out winners, Stan Clark taking 6-42 in the first innings to ensure the win.

With the unusual abandonment of the HCCA roster this year - the first time since the HCA was abandoned in 1941-42 for 3 seasons - we turn to look back again, this time at 1972-73.
The HCA finals saw Castle Forbes Bay defeat Slab Road in the 2nd Semi to proceed straight to the GF.
Huonville defeated Surges Bay, then knocked out Slab Road in straight sets to advance.
A key inning to Col Hickey for CFB of 47 coming in at 7 saw the Bay post 231. Bob Richardson snr was the hope for Huonville, but his dismissal for a game high 71 saw Huonville fall short at 184 - Tony Somers the match winner with 6-52.
