Yesterday, Dodworth faced Upton in the quarter final of the cup. With both teams without some key players, this was always going to be an interesting match up. Upton started the better of the teams. Their forwards ran really well behind the ruck and they had some good shape in attack. They got an early try and shouts of “Easy” from their players kicked the Miners back into gear. The Miners got back into the arm wrestle and a pin point kick from Dodworth Miner’s 22 Kieran Hyde (the most hated man in Upton) let speedster DJ score in the corner with a five that Tom Dailey would have been proud of. Tom Griffiths converted outstandingly from the touch line and the scores were even. Dodworth continued the pressure and were able to receive a penalty in which they decided to kick for goal. This put them 2 points up at 8-6. This is how the first half ended. The second half started and it was a really tough game with some bone crunching tackles going in from both sides. Upton’s star player Joe Jackson was causing havoc with the Miners defensive line. It was Dodworth to score next with 80 minute hooker Kieran Lee barging over from about 5 metres out. Joe Perry converted the try. The score was 14-6. Tempers began to flare and Dodworth were down to 12 players when powerhouse Oscar (spellcheck) Dyson was given a red card after retaliating to a head high tackle. With Dodworth down to 12, Upton really began to put some pressure on. They scored again and converted, making the score 14-12 to Dodworth. At this point, as well as being down to 12 players, Dodworth had no subs left due to injuries, but this did not stop them. Tom Hardwick scored another length of the field try. It is such a danger to have a player that can go the distance if he is given any space. Screams of “Get on your bike!” could be heard from a certain Mrs Whittaker from the sidelines. Dodworth began the 2024 league journey with a very tough away trip to Elland today. Elland and Greetland have joined forces and have merged to make a very strong team, and this showed from minute 1. We have not been up against a pack this big all year, and it was the first time in recent matches we have felt really on the back foot. The match started with Elland running harder, but Dodworth played the better rugby, which resulted in Dom Mannion scoring in the corner from a beautiful little grubber kick. The kick was unsuccessful from Joe Perry. The hosts hit back with a nice tip on try, but again, the conversion was unsuccessful. This meant the score was 4-4, which it remained until half time despite the fact that Elland had 3 very good opportunities to score but were just kept out each time. Half time came at a good time for Dodworth, and in the second half, Dodworth were going downhill with the wind at their backs. It was too and fro for the first 20 minutes with the game staying at 4 a piece. Some nice play and structure from the training park allowed Dodworth to break through with Tom Griffiths scoring to the right of the sticks. Tom Griffiths converted his own kick. Next came a moment of magic from Dodworth danger man Tom Hardwick, who collected a cross field kick and ran 80 metres, beating 4 or 5 players in the process to put Dodoworth out to an unreachable lead. The try was converted by Tom Grffiths. This left the game at Elland 4 - 16 Dodworth, which is how it remained for the rest of the game. Even though they were bigger and stronger than us today, our players never stopped working for each other, and our defence eventually won the game. Our error count was also much lower than theirs, which was a massive benefit for us. Man of the match went to Kieran Hyde, who controlled the game really well, and his kicking was pinpoint! Yesterday saw us take on Stanley Rangers Reserves in our second friendly of the year. After a significant defeat to Milford in our first friendly, we were looking for a big response from our players. We definitely showed that! Dodworth were dominant in the first half and showed some real skill in attack and grit in defence. Our halves ran the show, with hard running from our forwards that set a platform. Not to be outshone, our backs put in a lot of powerful runs to get us out of our half and put us on the front foot. Dodworth won 48-18 with the man of the match going to Joe Littlewood who is just returning from a serious knee injury. It is great to see him getting back to the form that he showed at the start of last year!
