At this time, T.I.P. does not have plans to offer a barrel racing championships in 2024, but will continue to explore opportunities to recognize barrel racing Thoroughbreds.

The great equalizer in this process? The horses: all 2024 prospects can start retraining on December 1, meaning that all competitors receive the same timeline to prepare their horses.

The 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover rulebook is now available athttps://www.therrp.org/wp-content/uploads/Rulebook_2024_ONLINE.pdf

Important Notices for the Octoberfest CCE Workshop Competition 10/29- this will be emailed to all competitors as well.

Please read the following before the briefing.
Prizes
Arion is providing a beautiful halter for the top placed horse in each division. There will also be other prizes for participants from Arion and CCEA.
Please attend the debriefing session at the conclusion of the competition to receive prizes.
Participants will vote on who they think showed the most horsemanship and sportsmanship at the Workshop - so be observant, and if you would like a really nice Arion halter, be the best you can be.
The organizer has added to this workshop so it will now include BOTH principal stages of CCE. Contact the organizer to make sure you are entered for both.
1) Cross Country Ride (CCR) and,
2) Jump Off Ride (JOR).

Schedule
We will need to keep to a tight schedule in order to have everyone complete their rides. Please be prompt and ready to go.
The first CCR round will begin as soon as possible after that last mini-trial XC rider finishes.
1) CCR: Level 2, Level 3, Level 4
2) JOR: Level 2, Level 3, Level 4
Please help each other, pass along information, assist with any course adjustments in JOR - anything to help us avoid delays.

Briefings and Course-walks
You must attend at least one briefing and course-walk. This will include a summary of basic rules for CCE, and answer any questions you may have.

Attempting Obstacles
You may attempt Regular obstacles twice before you must PASS and continue to the next obstacle.
You may attempt Challenge (triangle symbol) and Knock Down (circle symbol and all Stadium type jumps) only once before you must PASS.
Jump ONLY the obstacles on YOUR course. Do not attempt obstacles on other courses.

Passing Obstacles
You may PASS any obstacle on course. Pass on the side indicated by the blue arrow. Obstacles without a blue arrow may be passed on either side.
Pass by 10 feet or more so there is no suggestion you are attempting the obstacle.
Please PASS at least one obstacle on the course so you can understand the concept.

It may feel weird, but it is important to change the mentality from “jump it, or go home” to “what is best for my horse and me”. To receive a prize you MUST pass an obstacle on each course.

CCEA Membership
CCEA Membership is not required for this Workshop Competition. It will be required in the future. Becoming a member is VERY important, so we hope that everyone is or soon will be a member. Membership numbers directly demonstrate that there is enthusiasm for this new sport to potential organizers, other riders, and sponsors. If you want this sport to flourish an be accessible to more people and horses in more places, it is critical that you become a member and encourage others to do the same. The Minimum You Need to Know Before You Go...
Fundamentally, CCE is a cross country based jumping competition, where the competitor scores points for successfully jumping obstacles and incurs penalties for errors and exceeding the time allowed for the course.
CCE is entirely OBJECTIVELY scored. Scores determine placings and qualification. Every obstacle in CCE is optional, so the rider elects to attempt an obstacle or to Pass.
The principal Stages of CCE are the Cross Country Ride (CCR) and the Jump Off Ride (JOR).
CCR is a course of obstacles in an open setting, much like an eventing XC course. Most obstacles are fixed, the course is of moderate length and the pace is moderately fast.
JOR is a course of obstacles in a mix of arena and open settings, somewhat like a jumper derby course, beginning in the arena setting, followed by the open setting, and may return to an arena setting to conclude.
CCR is conducted in a predetermined order of go, and usually, multiple horses are on the course at a time.
JOR is conducted in a predetermined order of go and may have multiple horses on the course at a time unless the course returns to the first arena setting to conclude.
Passing is the act of not attempting or reattempting an obstacle. When an unsuccessful attempt has been made and the rider elects to Pass, they may simply continue on the course. When no attempt has been made the competitor must pass on the correct side of the obstacle when marked, or go through a Pass Gate comprised of two flags, located nearby. There is no penalty for Passing any obstacle correctly.
There are 4 categories of obstacles on a CCE course:
Regular (RG) obstacles are within standard dimensions and technicality for the Level of competition. RG obstacles can be attempted twice.
Challenge (CH) obstacles are more challenging and typically have dimensions and/or technicality of the next Level higher. CH obstacles can be attempted only once.
Knock Down (KD) obstacles have a top element that if dislodged incurs penalties. A KD obstacle may have either RG or CH dimensions and/or technicality. Kd obstacles can be attempted only once.
Connected (CO) obstacles are two or more obstacles in close proximity that do not safely allow only one to be attempted. CO obstacles can be attempted only once.
Basic Scoring:
POINTS RG obstacle 15 points CH obstacle 30 points
PENALTIES Refusal / Run-out KD element Exceeding Time Passing incorrectly
50 penalties 10 penalties 1 penalty per second started 50 penalties
Basic Tack, Equipment, Attire:
Whenever mounted an approved helmet and footwear with a heel is required. An approved safety vest is required whenever jumping. Full coverage pants (breeches, jeans, other) and a shirt with a sleeve is required at all times. Chaps and half-chaps are permitted.
Any tack or equipment that causes pain or excessive pressure is not permitted. Any type of saddle may be used, but other tack, especially bits are restricted. Bit-less bridles and bare back pads are permitted. All tack is subject to inspection.
Heart rate monitors and communication devices may be used in CCE. Riders are identified by back numbers and horses by a number decal.
