As this decade comes to a close, I think about where I was ten years ago. I was a sophomore in high school, unbelievably lost and experiencing a deep depression. It was at this time that I was first introduced to yoga, meditation and Buddhism. This period was the catalyst for everything to come, from my travels to meeting my partner to moving abroad to getting my degree to my yoga teacher training. It’s almost dizzying to think of everything that has happened and everything I’ve learned over the past ten years. Taking it all in I realize that it’s been an intense ten years of discovery and self-discovery. This past year in particular brought me personal growth, freedom and moments of joy. It brought me back to Paris and back into the transformative fire of “tapas”.

As we move into this new year and new decade, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on where you were ten years ago. Reflect on what you have accomplished and what you have learned in this time. As you turn inward, I invite you to hold the whole of yourself and your experiences with compassion. In doing so, we invite gratitude, kindness and perspective into the new year and the new decade 🙏

Over the past couple of months conversation around boundary setting has come up again and again with friends and family. Setting boundaries is hard, there’s no doubt about it. When we set boundaries we open ourselves up to the possibility of judgement, rejection and confrontation. But it means that we have a sense of self-worth, know our value and trust ourselves to make the right decision in a given situation. Boundary setting is necessary, deeply important and empowering 💪🏼

🌞 Happy Summer Solstice and International Day of Yoga 🌞

Summer is upon us, and with it comes warmer temperatures, longer days, increased activity, both physical and social, and a jam-packed calendar. This energy can be equally empowering and expansive or overwhelming and draining. The long-held postures of a restorative practice can balance the intense fiery-solar-summer energy and welcome some much needed grounding, calming and cooling. In this week’s classes we’re harnessing the solar energy with a strong practice, followed by a deeply restful restorative practice. Happy summer everyone!

Do you struggle to let go of work and your never ending to-do list? 💻⏰📑

The more people I talk to about work and rest, the more I realize how common it is to struggle with leaving work at the door, disconnecting and choosing rest in our “twenty-four/seven, always-on world,” as Alex Soojung-Kim Pang puts it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With overwhelming anxiety these last couple of weeks, I am learning more about how to set boundaries between work and rest, and about the benefits of deep, active rest. Learning how to rest deliberately is a skill to cultivate. A skill just like any other that takes practice, practice and more practice.

There will be times you will need to rest — so rest. Practice surrender and acceptance when you push yourself too hard. Your mat will hold and support you. There will be times you will need to let everything go — so sweat it out, pour your energy into your mat, purge yourself of all the frustration, anxiety and agitation. Your mat will match that energy.

Your mat can take a lot, and it can give a lot. Your practice will be whatever you need it to be. All you have to do is listen.

Bungee jumping 440 ft with 8.5 seconds of freefall: a practice in total presence.

If you’ve ever done anything that provokes fear or anxiety (giving a speech, going to an interview, etc...) you know that the hours and even days leading up to it are spent imagining how it will go (or more likely everything that could go wrong!). Even the mere thought of the situation puts your body into fight or flight mode and activates the stress response, pumping hormones like cortisol through your system and shutting down organs and processes that your body deems unnecessary. The body is incredible, isn’t it?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The problem is that the threat isn’t even present. The combination of mental images and thoughts played out in your mind and the resulting body sensation is what gives us emotion, in this case fear. That’s all it is — mental images, thoughts and body sensation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we don’t buy in or invest energy in to this mental process of projecting what the experience will be and feel like, we can practice total presence and pure awareness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is what I practiced, over and over again, leading up to the jump. As we were brought out to the suspended platform. As each person before me jumped. As they double checked my harness and hooked me in. As I brought my toes over the edge, with nothing in front of me but an immense canyon. As they began to countdown and as I let my body slowly fall forward into emptiness. This is our daily practice — continually coming back to the present moment, continually encouraging ourselves to interact with what is concretely in front of us. Practice presence.

“Know thyself,” the Ancient Greek aphorism. When you know yourself thoroughly you begin to have awareness of your internal reactions before you act from them.

A simple personal example, on a physical level: low blood sugar issues means I get tired, physically and mentally, very fast. Listening to my body and being aware of what it needs, I make sure to keep several protein bars and apples on me so that I can fuel my body and avoid lashing out at others because of low energy, headaches, bad mood, etc. After experiencing many such episodes I now know how my body functions, and I know to respect that and make it a priority.

Practicing yoga invites us to change our relationship with our body to one of respect and gratitude. A consistent practice teaches us to develop a sense of deep listening, to be kinder to ourselves and to respect our limits.

As a yoga teacher my goal is to assist students is establishing a dynamic, safe and sustainable physical practice, and in helping students cultivate qualities that move off the mat.

Our yoga practice is the most beneficial when it is fully integrated in to our life, when we begin to see our relationship with ourselves, with others and with the world change for the better.

Mindful speech 🗣 This weekend I went on a silent retreat in the woods and in doing so realized that I use words to fill space when I am anxious in social interactions. I am afraid of pauses or silences in conversation so I nervously fill the gaps with words. I am afraid of not measuring up and of being rejected so I use meaningless words to keep people at a safe distance. Sound familiar anyone? 🙋‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The yogic path is about using tools of self-reflection to learn about where we’re open and where we close down so that we can show up in the world as the best, most authentic version of ourselves. Next time we feel flustered or anxious we can pause, take a deep breath, slow down and be present to allow for a genuine and spontaneous interaction 🙏
