With India being a country so diverse to its very core, it should not be of a surprise that it is also home to some of the most unusual sports ever played. Some of these include:
1) Yubi Lapki: is a traditional game played in Manipur using coconut, and shares some similarities with the globally popular game rugby. Yubi Lakpi means coconut snatching and is traditionally associated with the Hindu religion.
2) Mallakhamb: an ancient Indian sport that dates back to the 12th century. It involves an immense amount of control and focuses on one’s movements. Mallakhamb has gained an international reputation too.
3) Kalaripayattu: a martial art designed for the ancient battlefield (the word "Kalari" meaning "battlefield"), with weapons and combative techniques that are unique to India. Like most Indian martial arts, Kalaripayattu contains rituals and philosophies inspired by Hinduism.
4) Insuknawr: Insuknawr or Rod Pushing Sport is an indigenous game of Mizoram, a state in North-East India.
Elephant polo: Elephant polo is a variant of polo played while riding elephants. It is played in Nepal, Rajasthan (India), and Thailand.
