🌎 Today is the start of World FTD Awareness Week 2022! This annual event is organized by World FTD United, a global coalition of FTD-focused organizations, and comprises a full week of events, activism, and engagement designed to bring more global attention to frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), the most common form of .

🧠 FTD’s estimated U.S. prevalence is around 60,000 cases, but because many in the medical community remain unfamiliar with it, FTD is frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s, depression, Parkinson’s disease, or a psychiatric condition. On average, it currently takes 3.6 years to get an accurate diagnosis.

Close to 40% of women said caregiving has adversely affected their mental health. Caregivers are a largely female group, and studies indicate women’s mental and financial well-being have suffered more than men’s during the pandemic.

Women report spending twice as much time caring for children as men, 68 hours compared to 34 hours. Those caring for children spend an average of 61 hours per week doing so; those providing care for adults average 28 hours per week.
