"I've been asked to announce the latest photo print up for sale. It's a beauty. The morning, air, the rising sun, the nearly obscured mountain top across a beautiful, pastel lake. Serene and perfect. A moment that captures and holds emotion. "

5 DAY AUCTION STARTS ON WEDNESDAY

Made from the Earth with natural ingredients that are provided by Mother Nature. Under the layers of paint is a ball that stems from hours, days, weeks of work harvesting and purifying the materials needed for each created ball. How deep and where I dig into the ground determines the process and length of that process. Some clay is hand pulled over 90 feet from the bottom of the lake with a boat anchor, and the following cleaning process is lengthy and tedious. Each natural ingredient added to the clay/dirt after the “cleaning” process strengthens or weakens the ball. There is a delicate balance that took many months to learn. The Japanese call this art form, Hikaru Dorodango. To master the process means you have mastered the art of patience. I believe no truer words were ever spoken.

The ball-making ingredient balance is incredibly important as it’s probable cracks will form, or the ball will simply crumble as it dries, if not done correctly. If the ingredient ratio is accurate, there is less chance of the shell cracking. Once a ball shell cracks, there is no repairing it. Fortunately, or unfortunately, a shovel full of dirt in one spot will not respond the same as a shovel full nearby or at a different depth. I win a few guesses / trials, but I lose a lot as each type of clay, soil, natural debris determines the outcome of each ball. The process’ results are nearly unpredictable and the variables involved means the ancient art is near impossible to master.

Under the layers of paint, each ball is as truly unique and one of a kind as the artwork on the outside. Though these balls are made of “mud” and other natural ingredients, there is a huge learning curb that requires a lot of determination, dedication, problem-solving, patience, and a whole lot of experience.

Each ball is different because they are handmade /shaped by my own hands and made with different natural materials. Thus, each ball is different in color, texture, hardness level, etc. After each ball is painted, I finish each ball with a resin coating to add strength. Not all balls are painted with acrylic. Several are not painted at all and show the beauty of the ingredients beneath the resin.

Each ball is a labor of love that I enjoy. From the intensive and often exhausted finding and harvesting of material, through the extensive ball-making process that takes nearly four weeks of daily shell-making, through the buffing to a shine and coating with resin as added protection and strength. Only then, can the painting begin. These balls can take days to weeks to paint each layer.

The finished product is breakable and should be handled with care. Like all artwork, they are a unique piece of art that should be admired more by the eyes than by the hands.
When asked how much each ball will sell for, I’ve been quoted as low as $80.00 – “$800.00, or more”. Personally, each ball is an experience, a journey that cannot be measured in monetary value.
