The Brain-Gut Connection 16/05/2018

I don't think that anti-depressants are a good idea for gut issues (especially because glyphosate- pesticides- can be the reason that the gut is disrupted...), but this is an interesting article. There are SO many reasons why the gut doesn't work properly, those issues need to be addressed. Anti-depressants have the side effects of "suicidal and homecidal thoughts"; They are NOT a good option for gut issues.

Stress, Portrait of a Killer - Full Documentary (2008) 04/05/2018

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYG0ZuTv5rs

This video presents some information about the deadly effect of stress. Stress affects the Autonomic Nervous System which is subconscious - beyond our thinking. So "thinking the right thoughts" does not protect the body from stress. REDUCING the stress load, does.

The gap between the "haves" and have nots" is growing every day.

(I have mixed feelings about the fact that animal research was done to secure these findings.)

Loss of sleep can reduce memory.

Half of people over the age of 65 have insomnia.

Loss of sleep is correlated with depression, and can contribute to a whole spectrum of behaviors that look like mental illness, including delusions, hallucination and lack of differentiation between sleep and wakeful states, thinking and behaviors (This can look like schizophrenia).

"Understanding the Role of sleep

If you think you’re managing just fine on four to six hours of sleep, but you just don’t feel up to par—you’re not sleeping as well as you used to; you’ve gained weight around your middle; you feel like your hormones are out of whack and you have no s*x drive; you feel irritable, you forget things; and your body is in pain—you are probably underestimating your body’s need for sleep.

Sleep plays a far more critical role than most people realize. When you’re sleeping, your brain remains very active, regulating a number of activities and performing maintenance that helps jumpstart you the next day. The number of hours that you sleep and the quality of sleep affects the amount of work the brain can accomplish. Without deep, restful sleep, you may feel like you’re dragging all of the time. For women, this is analogous to a dried out pot of flowers sitting on your porch in desperate need of water—droopy and sad. For men, it is like driving a car in desperate need of an oil change, ignoring the signals, until it’s too late. By then, it’s far more expensive to repair it. Even skimping a little on sleep over time may rapidly lead to serious mental, emotional, or physical problems. The quality of your sleep is as important as the quantity and also affects how you will function the next day—your mood waking up, your cravings, your mental acuity, your creativity, and your physical strength, as well as fluctuations in your weight and blood sugar.

No other activity provides as many benefits as sleep, and sacrificing sleep for anything else is simply not worth it. Ultimately, it comes down to the choice between productivity—getting just one or two more things done—and sleep.

The good news is that sleep is restorative. You can reverse the effects of aging by getting enough sleep over time. Contrary to what you might have heard, is not all downhill once you hit thirty—sleep rebuilds you every night and renews your brain and body daily."

Connect with friends

Spending too much time on your own can affect not only your mental health but your heart health as well. This holds true whether or not you’ve been actually diagnosed with heart disease.

According to one study, women in particular were more prone to angina, a heart-disease-related chest pain, and other problems if they had little social support when they were recovering from a heart attack.

So get out and about. However, make sure you’re connecting with true friends. If you have a lot of friends but they’re all mean to you, that won’t be beneficial.

Supine Twist

From Knees-to-Chest Stretch, release your grip of your shins and let your arms fall out to a "T" shape on either side of your torso. Use your core to guide your legs over to rest on one side, keeping your knees bent and shoulders planted down into your mattress. If it's easy on your neck, gaze toward the opposite side. Hold for 10 deep breaths, then repeat on the other side. Twists like this one awaken the body by increasing circulation and stretching the spinal muscles.

Impose a kitchen curfew

It's a good idea to close the kitchen well before lights out. If dinner is your largest meal of the day, make sure it's at least two the three hours before bedtime or you could force your digestive system to work overtime in a way that keeps you up. This is especially true with meals that are large, spicy, or rich, which can exacerbate acid reflux, another sleep-buster.

Watermelon

As its name suggests, watermelon is an excellent way to hydrate in the morning. What's less well known is this juicy fruit is among the best sources of lycopene—a nutrient found in red fruits and vegetables that's important for vision, heart health, and cancer prevention.

Best of all, watermelon contains just 40 calories per cup, landing it on lists of so-called negative-calorie foods that supposedly burn more calories during digestion than they add in. (Actually, it's a bit more complicated than that, but that's no reason to not eat watermelon!)
