Crux N Co was founded in 2012 by Josh Kelly and Jim Sotack as a socially responsible business to connect talented and underpaid jewelry and textile artisans in Guatemala with consumers in the United States, through Fair Trade and awareness. Guatemala with consumers in the United States. Without this income stream, local artisans, many of them Mayan women whose husbands died in the the Guatemalan genocide, are struggling to support their families and give their children an education. Crux N Co creates partnerships with these artisans and Mayan womens' weaving cooperatives. Connecting them to a worldwide market allows these artisans to get paid fairly for their crafts, without relying on inconsistent tourism levels. As part of our belief in the fair trade movement and an alternative business model, Crux N Co is built on social responsibility. We are very sensitive to the people and cultures we work with. We do not foster conditions that create an imbalance of power in our relationships with the artisans, a modern form of colonialism. Instead, we partner with artisans through a mutually beneficial relationship. All of our partners are autonomous and will only work with us as long as it is valuable for them. As a socially responsible business, our vision of success includes slow and sustainable growth while improving the wellbeing of everyone we work with.
