(STURGIS) – There will be two new teachers at Sturgis High School for the 2024-2025 school year.

During last week’s study session, the Sturgis Board of Education was presented with two teachers for consideration to be hired. Assistant Superintendent Nicole Gittinger introduced the candidates to the Board, starting with Mercedes Van Almen.

Gittinger says Van Almen will be a Middle School and High School Choir Teacher. She is a 2015 graduate of Sturgis High School and received a Bachelor of Music Education, Choral Music from Central Michigan University. She has been a substitute teacher for the Traverse City Area Schools and also in the Sturgis Schools District. Gittinger says it’s nice to have one of our own return.

The next candidate introduced by Gittinger was Brad Parker. Gittinger says Parker will joining SHS as a Special Education teacher. Parker has a Master of Science in Special Education from Ball State University, and currently is a special education teacher at Central Noble High School. He has over 16 years of special education teaching experiences and strong instructional skills.

The Board of Education unanimously approved hiring both Van Almen and Parker.
