It Wasn't in the Lesson Plan

It Wasn't in the Lesson Plan

It Wasn't in the Lesson Plan is the first narrative offering from Anne Tenaglia.

It features 33 vignettes gathered through 37 years of teaching, which demonstrate lessons learned from students.

Spent a frustrating 10 minutes trying to get thru on the ham radio to reply to a comment made about teachers by a right-leaning fellow. It's probably a good thing I didn't get through because my blood pressure is still up from it. He may have gotten his ears burnt from my rant.

Fellow was stating that kids don't know history because of the teachers. If the teachers were doing their jobs then the kids would know about the history of the USA.

He obviously doesn't realize that
1. History is not taught the way it was when we were in school
2. The aberration that is Social Studies today is so chock full of information the teachers CAN'T teach depth, only skimming the surface of the subjects.
3. You can't combine history, geography and civics into one subject and expect the same results as when they were each given way more time in the classroom than they are now.
4. The Common Core, NCLB, and the current ESSA laws dictate that Social Studies is relegated to the trunk, not even the back seat. Math and Reading are in the front seat, Science is in the back seat, Social Studies is in the trunk. Art, Music and any other subjects are running behind the car.
5. History/Science deniers (they seem to go together) have deliberately eliminated important concepts in textbooks dealing with stuff they don't want to think about.
6. Teachers teach, they differentiate for different styles of learning. What teachers can't do is MAKE the students learn. The old adage applies - You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
7. Teachers have been told what and how to teach for quite a while now. If you have a beef as to what kids are learning, look at the qualifications of the leaders in the Federal Department of Education, State Departments of Education. and many Superintendents of local school districts You will find an appalling number of people who have NO experience or only a couple years experience in teaching.

I'm going to stop now and go do some deep breathing.

Every child is different. Every class is different. Every year is different. Teachers need the flexibility to meet the needs of everyone. Standards should be a guideline, not a straitjacket.

My last year teaching in 2012 we were told NOT to read novels in my th grade class, but only present short passages of the book. And any time they read for pleasure, they had to answer questions about what they read. What a horrible thought. It's a good thing I disregarded all of that. But why should I have to sneak in reading for pleasure? Disgraceful!

Wumba
female, 4yrs, West Chester Campus
Just look at this beautiful lady! Wumba has lost her family twice through no fault of her own and has shown us what a playful sweetheart she is with people and other dogs. In the space of 2 months, Wumba was abandoned outside our clinic in Malvern with another dog, and then her adopter passed away. Large dog lovers wanted for this lady, who will play all day and even sit for pets and grooming. She would love to meet your family and any other dogs in the home to see how everyone gets along prior to adoption.

A couple weeks ago we had blue Jay feathers from Rowlf every day for a week. Turns out that was the anniversaries of the adoption of both Jingle and Rowlf.

Today we had a small grey feather on the anniversary of Rowlf's death.
