[Five Persons Commended for Sea Rescue at Sentosa]

On the morning of 9 July 2023, a group of six persons were using a kayak in the waters off Tanjong Beach, Sentosa when strong currents capsized their kayak. The kayakers kept themselves afloat by holding on to their capsized kayak and nearby floating barriers.

Mr Ang Eng Leng, Mr Tan Han Leng and Mr Nicholas Teo Han Wei, who were fishing nearby on board their jet skis, saw the distressed group of kayakers and immediately proceeded to render assistance. They managed to rescue four of the kayakers.

Mr Ahmad Hamim Bin Mohammad Hanib and Mr Jasmil Bin Jaafar who were working at the Ola Beach club nearby also responded to help using jet skis and rescued the last two kayakers. All six kayakers sustained minor injuries and declined to be sent to the hospital.

In recognition of their quick actions to assist others, the five Good Samaritans were each presented with the SCDF Community First Responder (CFR) Award on 25 September 2023. The awards were presented by COL Ryan Ong, Commander Marine Division, SCDF, and SUPT Desmond Ong, Commanding Officer, Brani Region, Police Coast Guard. The presentation was also attended by COL Bob Tan, Deputy Director, Volunteer and Community Partnership Department, SCDF, and Ms Regina Lim, Deputy Director (Safety Governance & Promotion), Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

You too can help by downloading the SCDF’s myResponder app and register as a CFR via the app. Through the app, you can be alerted to nearby emergencies such as a cardiac arrest incident or minor fires that can be quickly attended to by members of the public who are in the vicinity.

It’s All About The Fishes Saltwater Event 2.0

It was a fun and info-filled day out at the islands and it was an honour for me to be able to film videos for the event (and snap the few photos I took).

I personally benefitted from all the sharing by Ryan, Kelvin and Kok Ping. I'm sure all the participants did too.
