aditional wood carving and mask making. This class will include carving demonstrations, slide presentations, archival films, and videos. I will invite guest artists when available. Students will leave the completed course with:
* A solid understanding of the traditional designs and techniques of North West Coast (NWC) wood carving,
* A strong ability in applying the traditional designs and technologies of NWC wood carving. This course will teach basic tool safety, basic carving techniques, basic design and design layout, basic drawing techniques so students can sketch ideas before committing to actual carving, and there will be some basic sculpture in clay works as well. It is critical for beginning students to learn the language of art and to be able to discuss their art work in intelligent, thoughtful terms, therefore there will be several class critiques along the way that will encourage and teach students to reflect upon their experiences in class, discuss craftsmanship of their works, and to discuss their conceptual development. Beginning students should be able to complete at least three projects by course end. Intermediate Wood Carving
This course will be a continuation to the unique history, mediums, and concepts of North West Coastal Arts with emphasis in traditional wood carving and mask making. The course will emphasize tool safety, intermediate carving techniques, intermediate design and design layout. Intermediate students will sketch designs of the projects they want to carve before committing to actual carving. There will be some sculpture in clay works as well. It is critical for artists to be able to speak the language of art and to be able to discuss their art work in intelligent, thoughtful terms, therefore there will be several class critiques along the way that will encourage and teach students to reflect upon their experiences in class, discuss craftsmanship of their works, and to discuss their conceptual development. Intermediate level students will be able to carve larger scaled and more complex carvings than beginning level students. Depending upon complexity of carvings chosen by the student Intermediate students should be able to complete two or more complex carvings. Advanced Wood Carving
Advanced students will choose the number of carvings they will be carving and will be expected to have developed a strong understanding of the complexities of the carving tools and NWC art-forms they will be pushed to strive for mastery in both NWC design and carving skills.
