Midnight Realm - Engineering the Apocalypse

Ahhh Melodeath my old friend. No matter what mood I am in, the sweeping choruses and brutal riffs never fail. It’s also a great source of inspiration for a humble wordsmith.

Hailing from the North East of the UK, 5 piece Midnight Realm have been plying the tour trade for a while, leaving crowds agape at their performances. So then, anticipation is high for what will be their first full length outing.

It starts with the ominous soundscape of sirens and screams of ‘Malevolence Broadcast’ that are a prelude to an intro that fully announces “this is going to be great”.

‘I, The Architect’ opens with that classic dual riff shredding that makes Melodic Death Metal so attractive. The impressive guitar work continues, backed by some astounding speed metal drumming. Growls and screams form a swirling vortex of sound that serves as an impressive start.

The fade into ‘The Rebuild’ is fantastic; the double kick pounding along to a cracking riff that makes headbanging virtually irresistible. By the time the surprise of a clean vocal lead chorus comes in, I found myself fully immersed into the brutal soundscape that was being constructed. The second time the chorus hits cements this as one of my favourite tracks on the album.

‘Kings Will Crawl’ hits like a sledgehammer. The riff/vocal combination around 1 minute had me gurning in approval and the angelic symphonic backing track sets up a clean vocal chorus that fits perfectly amongst the audioclastic chaos.

‘Beckoned to Bleed’ serves up a complex and a little chaotic intro before it levels out to more top-quality, bonce-bounce worthy metal. The breakdown around 2 minutes is wonderfully heavy and yet again I found myself grinning appreciatively.

What comes next is a two track, 17 minute metal masterpiece showing that should see the star of Midnight Realm ascend to the top pantheon.

‘The Oncoming Storm’ starts in an almost serene manner but this is but a lull into the false sense of quiet. Roars of rage power forward into a clean vocal led verse that once more gives way into the fury of death-metal music. More clean vocals soften things up again but once more into the maelstrom we go as the song closes in a vortex of crushing riffs, beautifully crafted symphony and machine-gun drums.

Scarcely having enough time for my breath the return, the anthemic opening of ‘Polemos’ had my fists raised into the air. It would take a month to dissect each part of the 10 minute display of the final track to the album, however I would challenge even the staunchest of non-movers in the crowd to not be inspired to go full “LIMBS!” at the scintillating way that the release is brought to a close.

Ahh Melodeath, here I am once more, grinning from ear to ear after being taken on a musical journey with so many ups and literally zero downs. Music is my sanity. It is my safe house to which I can escape the world.

"Die Briten Midnight Realm waren für mich lange eine dieser "Was wäre wenn?"-Bands. Gegründet im Jahr 2012 veröffentichte der Fünfer mit "Polarissima" schnell sein Debüt, das im Melodic-Death-Metal-Underground durchaus für einiges an Aufsehen sorgen konnte. Doch 2015 verabschiedete sich die Band recht überraschend von der Bildfläche, ohne gefühlt je ihr komplettes Potenzial ausgeschöpft zu haben. Überraschenderweise kehrte das Quintett 2019 allerdings mit neuem Lineup zurück und kündigte einen neuen Langspieler an, der nach einigen Verzögerungen durch die Corona-Pandemie nun endlich unter dem Titel "Engineering The Apocalypse" erscheint."

Prepare to embark on a dark descent into the mind of “The Architect”, a man who’s whose struggle to decipher premonitions from reality leads him to believe he is a prophet of global catastrophe. You can grab an early sneak peak of these songs in the video below.

Happy Friday everyone!

We have a long, long overdue update for you.

As many of you are aware, our new album Engineering the Apocalypse should be out and firmly embedded into your playlists by now. We’re well into Wintersun levels of delay and we just want to give you an idea as to the current timeline for release:

As of today, we have had to re-recorded the album 4 times. This is for a myriad of reasons (corrupted data, improvements in recording tech, sheer perfectionism etc) but instrumentally the record is now fully complete and mixed.

We have one, potentially two vocal sessions left to complete the record in full. The delay on this is the combination of us all having full time demanding jobs, none more so than Kirk who spends his days saving peoples lives. He’s over in Slovenia now taking a well-deserved rest (if you can call it that) at MetalDays, but once he’s home we’re getting a date in the diary to finish the last song. Then the record is away to be fully mixed by Owain Williams.

Everything else is completed; the next single has been chosen, the album artwork is ready and new merch designs have been created. We’ll be looking to release the track listing alongside snippets of tracks and all the good stuff over the coming weeks.

That being said, rather than let you continue to wait for new music without at least a little bit of something new, we’ve decided to release what would have been the B side to our new single a little earlier than anticipated.

A re-recorded version of our 2012 single Solaris will be hitting all streaming platforms this coming Friday, 5th August. We hope you all enjoy it and thanks again for your patience, we really think it’s worth the wait!
