Talk about making your show! This story is a wonderful testament to how important it is to create your own work, especially in such a difficult industry. Thanks to Cinema Shorthand Society for posting this inspirational post and happy birthday to Robert Townsend!

Frustrated at the lack of significant screen roles for African Americans, Robert Townsend scraped together roughly $100k to produce, direct, write and star in "Hollywood Shuffle" (1987), the story of an aspiring minority actor. Townsend put $40,000 of the film's budget on ten personal credit cards. He got free film stock by splicing together leftovers from the production of "Odd Jobs" (1986) and" Ratboy" (1986).

The film is semi-autobiographical, reflecting Townsend's experiences as a black actor when he was told he was not "black enough" for certain roles.

The 17 days of shooting were spread over two years, between Townsend's tours as a stand-up comedian. the crew shot without permits, and wore UCLA T-shirts so they could pass themselves off as students learning how to film in the field.

Following the success of "Hollywood Shuffle," film projects continued to pour in. Townsend was soon directing Eddie Murphy in "Eddie Murphy: Raw" (1987); Townsend had auditioned to be part of "Saturday Night Live"'s 1980–1981 cast, but was rejected in favor of Murphy.

His next film endeavor was"The Five Heartbeats" (1991), reminiscent of the 60s R & B male groups and the ups and downs of the music industry, loosely based on the lives of several artists: The Dells, The Temptations, Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Frankie Lymon, Sam Cooke and others).

This was followed by "The Meteor Man" (1993), one of the earliest superhero films to feature an African-American in a starring role. The film received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Science Fiction Film, but lost to "Jurassic Park" (1993). (IMDb/Wikipedia)

Happy Birthday, Robert Townsend!

As a company that reveres storytelling, especially on the small screen, we are honoring Norman Lear today.

A television pioneer who introduced us to new points of view, showed us diversity and provoked our thoughts, Norman Lear presented the best of what television can do and left an indelible mark that we won't see the likes of too soon, if ever.

Thank you, Mr. Lear and rest in peace.

Wishing all of our friends, colleagues, clients and followers a day full of the ones you love and lots of things to be thankful for.
