The Arts at Highland Elementary
We are a collective group of teachers at Highland Elementary that are specific towards teaching the Arts and Humanities to our students.

It is been a while since I've made a post about the art activities of Highland Elementary. That's because we've been very busy creating a lot of artwork that covers the seven continents of the world. In April we will have a culminating program where the students and their parents will travel by passport to all seven continents where they will experience the culture of those countries and continents!
Nothing says fall like beautiful pumpkins and foliage.
Halloween is just around the corner so this week our students are creating original monsters! How scary and exciting!
This week the students are learning about Vincent van Gogh. We are applying our knowledge about color from last weeks lesson. Our up close perspective of a sunflower includes both warm and cool colors. The flower uses the warm colors. The background consists of cool colors.
This week the students learned all about color theory.
This past week the students of Highland Elementary studied the artwork of Wasilly Kandinsky. We discussed nonobjective art work and created our own version of his concentric circles based upon the story of "The Dot" about Peter H.rentals.
This week the students at Highland are learning to create an abstract cityscape inspired by the Olympics in Rio. They are applying their knowledge of the elements and principles of art.
This throwback Thursday goes out to all of these middle schoolers! What an awesome group of kids we had here at Highland and know the future is bright for these kiddos!
This week the students of Highland Elementary are revisiting the work of author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. We are focusing primarily on the elements of color and line.
This is our first week back with students at Highland Elementary! We are beginning by studying the artwork of peter H Reynolds famous author and illustrator or of children's books. These three books all have a main character but doesn't really believe in their ability to create art. But in each story someone comes along and gets the main character to see their true potential and encourage them not to give up! The main goal of this weeks lesson is to encourage our students to do the same.
Fifth grade students here at Highland elementary have been working very hard on researching famous people. After weeks of hard work they are presenting in a dramatic fashion about their famous person. This helps us fulfill the drama portion of program review.
We are continuing our study of famous artists. This week the students Highland elementary are studying Paul Klee and Salvador Dali. They are creating abstract surrealistic cityscapes.
Here is some artwork that the 5th grade students did in social studies! Aren't they great!!
This week the students at Highland elementary will be studying the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci and contemporary pop artist Romero Britto. They will be creating a version of the Mona Lisa entitled Mona Cat.
This week the students of Highland Elementary will be studying the artwork of Claude Monet as well as the Impressionistic movement.
Kindergarten through second grade are learning about pointillism and George Seurat. We started by studying color theory both primary and secondary colors.
This week the students of Highland Elementary are studying the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. They are attempting to re-create his most famous painting "Starry Night". This has been a two-week project . The first week they drew the painting and added glue which dried to form texture. This week they are adding the color using oil pastels.
Recently the Nashville ballet company came to Highland elementary to perform. The students thoroughly enjoyed their dances. They danced to Camille Saint-Saens "Carnival of the Animals". This performance helps us to for fill the dance portion of our program review.
In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday the students at Highland elementary have been given the opportunity to create a representation of any of his books. The students will be voting on which one is their favorite and respond to the art through a written response about why they like that particular presentation.
Last Friday students at Highland elementary studied about African fables and put their dramatic skills to work by acting them out.
Recently students kindergarten through third-grade enjoy the performance of Aesop's fables be the Bright Star theatre company.
We recently enjoyed a performance entitled "Let Your Light Shine" performed by performers of the Bright Star Theatre. This production taught our fourth and fifth graders all about the civil rights movement.
Several weeks ago we were asked to think of a word that would represent a goal that we had in mind for ourselves for this year. Each student and teacher chose their word. Kindergarten students and their teachers chose to decorate their word and posted them in the hall.
This past week students in second grade at Highland elementary studied some of our nations symbols. Part of the project was to make a presentation to the class in the form of a speech and a poster about their symbol. As you can see they use their art skills to represent their symbol.
This week the students of Highland elementary are looking forward to a visit from the Nashville ballet. In order to prepare for their visit the students are learning how to draw the human form with correct proportions. They are learning how to place the human form in different positions.
This week the students of Highland elementary are on week two of their African unit. They are creating three-dimensional abstract African masks. They understand the ceremonial purposes of these masks.
This week the students of Highland Elementary are studying about West African culture and the animals of the Serengeti Plain. They are using two dimensional geometric shapes to make their drawings of the animals.
