Decoding Dyslexia - Indiana (DD-IN) is a grassroots movement of parents seeking to raise awareness about dyslexia among parents, the general public, educators, community leaders, and legislators. Take the time ( ask for help if you need it) to compare the real scores of tests over time!
The CTOPP for Phonological Processing assessment tells you about the first skill needed phonemic awareness - (example : Elision, nonsense word, phonological memory and blending subtests.)

These are tests that are normed and valid reliable diagnostic reading assessments, are the tests that matter and percentiles can be viewed over time.
Levels ( like the BAS or LLI reading level like "level F or level H" on the other hand are like “magical measures” that appear to go up but with no relevance to the Essential Components of Reading Instruction listed in ESSA or IDEA! There is no connection between these "levels" and the skills needed to improve reading.
Great opportunity for those in Indy!

Parents have inflated perceptions of student achievement. National research documents that 90% of parents believe their child is at or above grade level in reading and math. In reality, only 37% of students nationally perform at or above grade level in reading and math—a 53% gap between parent perception and reality.

We do not support mandatory retention. We do support training teachers in the 4th and 5th grade space to provide differentiated instruction. The problem is the lack of manpower and training. More needs to happen sooner and not wait. More of the same which is already not working is not the answer. We also support providing those students with access to the curriculum by allowing them to ear read while they are also receiving quality intervention.
Thousands of Indiana students move on to 4th grade without reading skills, despite state policy Around 96% of Indiana students who did not pass the IREAD-3 moved to fourth grade over the last decade, according to a presentation at the State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. If your child will be taking Collegeboard’s PSAT or SAT in October of next year, be sure to have the school request needed accommodations no later than this spring, well before summer recess. Once those accommodations are in place, they will remain in place throughout high school for all testing through Collegeboard. Many students have been denied their accommodations because they were either not requested or requested too late!

We are so excited about all of the work that the Greenwood Public Library (Greenwood, Indiana) does in engaging the community. Two of the children’s librarians are trained in Orton Gillingham. They ensure there are plenty of decodables and they integrate their knowledge into storytime! They are a wealth of knowledge! We need to spread their model across the state!

We continue to hear from families whose children were not provided with their appropriate accommodations on their PSAT/Collegeboard test. Be sure to check to see if Collegeboard received the appropriate documentation on time to receive the accommodations. Parents are often told that this is a meaningless test however, this is an opportunity for your student to test with their accommodations. Once a student receives approval for their accommodations, they remain in place throughout high school. Some students get these in place their freshman year so that they are available for testing.
**New this year: A student’s SAT scores will be included on their high school transcript.
