Hoppy 4th of July from Kiki and all of us at RRR!

Please remember, fireworks can be very frightening for your bunnies and other animals. Take extra precautions to ensure your rabbits’ comfort over the holiday weekend.

Our poster is over 20 years old. Back then, we were so hopeful that in 20 years, this message would be obsolete. But, the sad truth is that outdoor rabbit abandonments are worse than they’ve ever been.

We will never know how many rabbits suffer terrible injuries and death before we ( & all of you warriors out there!) can save them.

Please spread the word! Domestic rabbits are NOT the same species as Eastern Cottontails or any of the other “wild” breeds who have the necessary survival skills that nature demands.

Caring for RRR’s many sanctuary and foster rabbits requires a lot of daily cleaning. 🧹🧽🪣 Luckily, Pink is always ready to help out by washing his own toys!

Please share. This wonderful boy, Paddington is much larger than each of his parents. His dad and pregnant mom were rescued outdoors, during the worst heat wave of summer 2023.

Many pet shops and breeders tell people that they are purchasing a “dwarf” rabbit. Please don’t take any advice from pet shops or breeders. To them, rabbits are objects to monetize. Contact a rescue group who will tell you the truth and fully educate you. To us, they are significant members of the family; no matter what size they are!

It's the time of the year when our wild neighbors are busy having their young. It is also our time to offer protection to our native wild rabbit, the Eastern Cottontail.

For a variety of reasons, mother Cottontails are notorious for making their nests in the middle of a lawn. They can be difficult to see. Please carefully walk around your yard before you or a landscaper does any work, particularly mowing or using a w**d wacker. Use extreme caution before allowing dogs or cats loose on your property. Each year, countless cottontails are the victims of cat and dog attacks and lawnmowing injuries. Avoid using chemical fertilizers and pesticides as well.

These precious little rabbits have so many challenges just trying to survive, they really need us to protect them the best we can💚

** If you find a Cottontail in need, contact a licensed Rehabber in your area. Use “Animal Help Now!” For assistance.

Rabbits are not Easter gifts! The lifetime care of an animal is a commitment that must be entered into thoughtfully. With Easter coming up, help us spread the word by sharing this post.

Rabbits make wonderful companions, but only for those who have thoroughly considered their special care needs and who are looking for a family member with a life expectancy of over 10 years. Rabbits require a spacious indoor home, and their vet care can be costly. They are fragile and do not like to be picked up, so are seldom suitable for children, and absolutely never appropriate as a “starter pet.”

Puffin, our little 8-year-old hotot, has faced a number of big health scares this year. Over the summer, he was rushed to the emergency hospital in the middle of the night with odd symptoms. He wasn’t eating, his temperature was high, and he felt very uncomfortable.

The emergency clinic took an X-ray, which showed the large areas of gas that were causing him acute pain, but also found a very strange mass in his chest. Puffin was treated for stasis, and also had an ultrasound done to learn more about the mass. Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with much more conclusive information, and the team at the emergency hospital said their best guess was that we were dealing with aggressive metastatic disease. They sent Puffin home with strong pain medication and a poor prognosis, suggesting we should prepare to only have days to weeks.

Incredibly, that was 4 months ago, and today Puffin is showing absolutely no signs of pain, discomfort or illness. We are so thankful that his most recent follow-up x-rays show the mass looking identical to how it looked in July, so although Puffin’s vets still don’t know what exactly the mass is, it’s now clearly not metastatic and we hope tremendously that it is something he can live with painlessly for a many years to come.

RRR relies entirely on donations to afford our rabbits’ veterinary expenses, and we ask that you please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support Puffin’s care in honor of Giving Tuesday. ❤️

We’re in the midst of one of the worst years for rabbit abandonments in recent memory. On any given day, RRR will receive half a dozen emails asking for help finding placement for rabbits: owner surrenders, dumped rabbits spotted outside, accidental litters, and more. In July, one of these emails came from a woman who’d found a rabbit abandoned in her Yonkers backyard.

When we finally found and caught Avery, as we named her, we had barely a moment to breathe a sigh of relief before she feverishly began gathering huge bundles of hay and clumps of her own fur to build a nest in record time. Not an hour after she set to work, Avery gave birth to four babies in the early morning hours of July 20th. Two boys, Paddington (tan) and Pigeon (black) and two girls, Sapphire (white) and Waverley (grey).

Avery’s babies are now 4 months old, (and all bigger than their mom!!) and will all be spayed and neutered in the coming months. RRR relies entirely on donations to afford our rabbits’ veterinary expenses, and we ask that you please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support this family in honor of Giving Tuesday.

The full story of Avery and her babies was featured in the September 2023 issue of our newsletter, Thump!

This has been a record year for both outdoor rescues and significant veterinary expenses for our sanctuary rabbits. Pictured here is Lilac, one of our sanctuary rabbits who came to RRR several years ago. Earlier this year, we were devastated to find a large mass in her abdomen; an already complicated situation that intensified when Lilac developed a mass at the base of her ear consistent with an inner ear infection.

In August, Lilac received a full body CT scan to assess the status of both her abdominal mass and ear infection. The scan confirmed an abscess in her left ear, which was aspirated to remove some of the pus and send for a culture and sensitivity test. It also gave us more information on the abnormalities in her abdomen in preparation for surgery.

During surgery, one large mass was removed (and histopathology later confirmed it to be an abscess), but a second large mass was completely entangled and attached to other organs, including her bladder. This mass will never be able to be removed, but as it has thankfully caused her no pain or discomfort. Lilac is recovering from this surgery very nicely; she has already returned to her usual playful behaviors and is now on a new antibiotic for her ear abscess.

Over the past year, Lilac’s veterinary expenses have already exceeded $8,000. RRR relies entirely on donations to afford our rabbits’ veterinary expenses, and we ask that you please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support Lilac’s care in honor of Giving Tuesday.

Lilac’s full story was featured in the September 2023 issue of our newsletter, Thump.

It’s hard to believe, but beautiful Lucy was found outside in a dirt alleyway off a busy street where someone had cruelly abandoned her. Now adjusting to the safety of her foster home, Lucy's active and curious personality is shining through. She is a very young and playful rabbit who loves interacting with people and toys, and especially enjoys carrying her stacking cups to different spots around her pen and exercise space. If you are interested in adopting Lucy, please email [email protected]

FIREWORKS are terrifying for rabbits and other animals. Please keep your furry & feathered families safe. The more you can do to keep sound up indoors, and the outdoor noise out, the better. Keeps air conditioners running, put a few fans on, keep the TV on, radios, etc. keep a close eye on your bunny’s reaction. If they are affected, do more to drown out the firework noise. Hopefully, someday, fireworks will cease to exist and animals won’t have to suffer.

RRR grad Lilia and her mom made the front page of today’s paper with the message that rabbit adoption is a serious commitment!

Thousands of rabbits are purchased impulsively and then abandoned every year after Easter time when people learn they live for 10+ years, require a large indoor space and very specific diet, and require specialized vet care from a rabbit-savvy vet. Rabbits are not a novelty; they deserve a lifetime commitment.

Thank you to for helping to spread the message!! 🐰🐰

✨ There’s no place like a forever home ✨

Stanley is one of the luckiest ones. In 2014, one of our volunteers rescued him from a neglectful home, had him neutered and he was adopted out via speed date as a partner to a sweet bun named Pixie. They bonded quickly and were inseparable for many years until Pixie crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. Stan remains a beloved member of his human family. Now in 2023, almost 9 years after his adoption, we cannot thank his doting adopter Nicole enough for giving him an amazing life and committing to his entire life. He has what we wish for all rabbits: a loving, safe and true forever home. 💜

There is still time to make a year-end donation for 2022! RRR relies solely on donations to continue our work helping rabbits. Read below to learn about our goal of purchasing a cold laser therapy machine to help alleviate pain from chronic, degenerative conditions for our sanctuary rabbits, and thank you so much to those who have already donated! 💜

*****

RRR takes in many injured, older, and chronically ill rabbits with life-long special care requirements; these bunnies become sanctuary rabbits and remain in our care forever. With the holiday season upon us, please consider making a year-end donation to help support their ongoing care.

This year, RRR's holiday wish is to purchase a cold laser therapy machine to help alleviate pain from arthritis and other degenerative conditions in our senior rabbits. RRR currently has 8 rabbits who we are treating for varying degrees of arthritis pain, including Angelina, pictured here with her partner Puffin. Angie began to develop arthritis in her spine when she was only 6 years old; young to begin having symptoms of the severity that we were seeing. For several years now she has been on increasing dosages of metacam and gabapentin, and she receives adequan injections and myristol (an oral supplement) to support joint function.

Her arthritis is now affecting not only her spine, but her back legs and feet as well. Angie and many of our other sanctuary rabbits would benefit greatly from the added therapy of cold laser treatments, done in the comfort of their own home (frequent travel is hard on our senior rabbits), to help combat their arthritis pain.

The machine we wish to purchase will cost $2200. RRR relies entirely on donations to support the ongoing care of all of our rabbits. Any donations towards our goal are deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for your continued support of the bunnies. ❤️
