Be safe this holiday both in and around the water!

⭐️Always stay within arms reach of your child when in the water and always be IN the water with your child
⭐️Assign a “Water Watcher” in 15 minute increments if you are around the water regardless if swimming time is planned- they must stay off their phone during their “shift”
⭐️Hire a lifeguard if you plan to have a party where a pool or other water is present
⭐️Place tables, chairs, or any other furnishings a few feet away from your pool child safety fence. Curious children can climb onto these items and find their way over the fence
⭐️Check the integrity of pool fence latches and door locks leading to the water
⭐️Remove pool floats and toys from the pool when finished swimming to not entice a little one into the water
⭐️Dress your child in a brightly colored swimsuit if at the beach or pool
⭐️ Drink lots of water and reapply sunscreen often
⭐️Use only US Coast Guard approved life jackets when on open water
⭐️Have a SAFE holiday!

Great first swimming lesson for penguins, but NOT how ISR Instructors teach kids how to swim!!

I get asked all the time if “those are the lessons where they just throw the kids in?” The easy and clear answer is…
No! We teach children Self-Rescue skills in a way that honors how children learn best. We teach skills one baby step at a time & we are always building on the skills the child has already learned. In fact, there is never a point in ISR lessons where we throw the child into the water because it’s not necessary and can be unsafe. You will find copycat programs on social media (some even claim to be ISR or teach the same thing as ISR) who will throw kids or have them holding their breath for long periods of time. While that gets lots of views and attention in the social media world, it’s often unsafe.

Safety is our first priority during ISR Lessons so we do gentle and intentional simulations of possible ways a child might fall in and we’ve found that is all they need to be prepared for an accident in real life!

My dream one day is that everyone will cringe at the fact that we thought relying on flotation devices for babies and toddlers was a good idea...
And that health insurance companies will cover survival swim lessons as a part of preventative healthcare...
And that preschools and schools will offer programs to teach self rescue skills to all children...

Also, just so I am saying it--- Coast guard approved life jackets are appropriate in open water or unpredictable water environments.
