Many of you know, Alice Garrick our sister from Pakistan, who has a wonderful ministry to women, children and youth there. I, Cathy Virgilio Capo Stone, I’m asking that you pray for our sister Alice today as she is in the US attending the United Nations event in New York. She is alone and trying to sell items made by her women in the market to bring funds home for her ministry. Some of you who have attended her sales in Tampa when she has visited know how physical it is to cart all of those wares to the market and set them up so that people want to look at them and purchase them. She has no help there in New York, and was very overwhelmed when I got a message from her yesterday. Please lift her in prayer now that she would have physical strength, a sharp mind and kindness on her tongue as she shares about her ministry and hopefully sells many items today and throughout this week. She will not be visiting Tampa this time, but I will be going to see her in Naples the Monday after Easter. If you would like to send a gift to her, please let me know, and I will be happy to bring it to her. Meanwhile, she is working on arrangements to get a bank account here in the US while she’s here so that we can begin purchasing items from her again to benefit her ministry throughout the year. I will keep you posted. Below is an interview she shared with me that was published internationally for women’s day. It features Alice’s ministry and her daughter Sarah. I hope you will enjoy it. Please keep Alice in prayer.

Faith Talks: Women’s History Month | United Women in Faith 05/03/2023

If you missed it, United Women in Faith kicked off Women’s History Month with a Faith Talk on March 2 at 2 p.m. ET honoring the invaluable impact of “Sandwiched Caregivers” and the history they make every day in their workplace and in their communities, while juggling responsibilities for children, youth, and aging parents.

United Women in Faith-related National Mission Institutions around the nation provide needed help and support to many of these women. Gulf Central District’s own Cathy Capo Stone, Executive Director, Cornerstone Family Ministries and Kenya Monroe were interviewed on the podcast along with Yvette Richards.

If you missed it, watch for the recording to post on this link…https://uwfaith.org/event/faith-talks-commemorating-womens-history-month/

REGISTER USING LINK BELOW! Brittany K. Barnett author of A Knock at Midnight was a law student when she came across the case that would change her life forever—that of Sharanda Jones, single mother, businessowner, and, like her, Black daughter of the rural South. A victim of America’s war on drugs, Sharanda had been separated from her young daughter and was serving a life sentence without parole for a first-time drug offense. As Barnett studied this case, a system came into focus with widespread racial injustice at the core of America’s addiction to incarceration. Moved, Barnett set to work to gain Sharanda’s freedom. The memoir is at once Barnett’s coming-of-age story and a powerful evocation of what it takes to bring hope and justice to a system built to resist them.

A Knock at Midnight appears on the 2023 Reading Program list as a Leadership Development selection.

Join other United Women in Faith for a special talk with the author. There is no cost to participate. All are welcome. Pre-reading of the book is not required, but it will enrich your experience of the author talk. Space is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Register here.

As the daughter of a formerly incarcerated mother, Brittany knows first-hand the impact of mass incarceration is far reaching, devastating families and entire communities. Dedicated to transforming the criminal justice system, Brittany founded two nonprofits to carry out her life’s work: the Buried Alive Project, which works to dismantle life without parole sentences handed down under federal drug laws and Girls Embracing Mothers, dedicated to empowering girls with mothers in prison.

Through her criminal justice work, Brittany has encountered some of the most brilliant minds humanity has to offer. Her work is multi-dimensional. She not only frees people from prison, she uses her extensive corporate experience to cultivate their creative and entrepreneurial powers to better the world. Brittany is the founder of the Manifest Freedom Fund and Milena Reign, social enterprises devoted to shifting the paradigm to show the world changing impact that formerly incarcerated people can have when they have access to resources not to merely survive, but to thrive.

She is a graduate of SMU’s Dedman School of Law. She previously served as the Associate General Counsel at ORIX USA Corporation focusing on mergers & acquisitions and general corporate matters. Prior to her legal career, Brittany earned her license as a Certified Public Accountant and worked for international accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting.

Brittany’s life-saving work has been featured nationally on multiple news platforms, including television and print. She has earned many honors, including being named one of America’s most Outstanding Young Lawyers by the American Bar Association. Her memoir, A Knock at Midnight, was named by Amazon's Book editors as the #1 best book of 2020.

As many of you know, Alice Garrick, ministers to women in Pakistan. It has been her life’s work. She empowers otherwise oppressed women to earn a living for their families so they do not fall prey to the many forms of trafficking and sexual exploitation that conspire against them.

Alice’s ministry empowers women through education and job programs. She helps train some women to become midwives and others to create beautiful handcrafts (shawls, household items, jewlery and purses). She gives them and their children hope and a sustainable income.

She left many items with Cathy Stone when she was here this summer for Assembly and has sent a number of additional BEAUTIFUL items made by women throughout the many regions of Pakistan. Cathy will be posting photos of these items on a private FaceBook event page starting at 9am THIS Saturday morning. If you want to be invited to this event, please type INVITE ME in the comments.

If you still need Christmas gifts, this is a great chance to check off your list with unique and beautiful items that will also make a difference in the life of these women who need our support. The donations collected will make it possible for them to have a good Christmas, warm clothing and for Alice to continue her work.

COMMENT “INVITE ME” IF YOU WANT CATHY TO SEND YOU AN INVITATION!

Almost 1,000 killed as flooding devastates Pakistan 28/08/2022

Ladies, I just got off of a video chat with Alice Garrick in Pakistan. The situation there is desperate. Adding to the political and social unrest, flooding has effected the entire country. Loss of life and property has effected everyone but the poor are suffering the most. Many are homeless and crops have been washed away and as a result…food shortages are expected for many months to come.

The artisan women Alice’s ministry works with have stopped being able to make items to earn income for their families and the items they made prior to the flood are not selling locally due to the conditions. I have many items Alice brought with her to sell at Assembly still here in my home that could be sold here for their benefit.

As we leave summer and Units prepare for Fall Craft Sales and events and church members begin thinking about purchasing holiday gifts, please consider taking some of the beautiful items on consignment to sell at your church. With the demands of my work at Cornerstone, I will not be able to come to each church…but I can prepare you to share the message of Alice’s ministry. If your church doesn’t have sale planned, consider hosting a table sale each Sunday in September after your worship services. Your help getting all of these items sold to get the money to Alice ASAP would be one way we could do something to help. If this is something that you can do, please reach out to Cathy Virgilio Capo Stone via private message and I’ll put together a bundle of items for you to sell. In addition, there will be an article in the upcoming newsletter with other ways you can help but for now PRAY for Pakistan and let me know if you’d like to help sell the items Alice has already left with me.
