Live updates: Trump, 18 others charged in sweeping indictment in Georgia election probe A Fulton County grand jury has indicted former President Trump for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
This is another great column by Dana Milbank about how Republicans are now mimicking Trump as they circle the wagons to protect him, how they are “weaponizing” the power of the House to try to interfere with Trump’s indictment, and how they are pursuing ridiculous “investigations” with their new House majority.
It’s no surprise that House Republicans leaped to Donald Trump’s defense after news of his indictment broke late Thursday. What was striking, though, was how many elected GOP officials now sound like Trump.

Why Pa. Democrats being inches from controlling the state House is significant — win or lose The Democratic Party has netted at least 10 seats in the Pennsylvania House, with a caucus that ranges from a Democratic Socialist in Philly to a gun-toting budget hawk in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
New House maps, as the result of redistricting earlier this year, were expected to slightly favor Democrats. That being said, with 113 Republicans and 90 Democrats currently in the 203-member House, a Democratic majority seemed like a tall-task, regardless of the new map. However, after strong performances up and down the ballot on Tuesday, especially in blue suburbs and purple counties, the ambitious goal could become reality.
To win a majority, Democrats will need to pick up one of two seats in races that have not been called. Earlier Thursday afternoon, Democrats needed two of three races, but the race for the 144th District in Bucks County was officially called for Democratic challenger Brian Monroe Thursday evening. Munroe defeated Republican incumbent Rep. Todd Polinchock by roughly 400 votes

Legend has it a woman asked Benjamin Franklin a question as he exited Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787. “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin supposedly replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

“‘The unborn’ are a convenient group to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politcally correct; unlike widows, they do not ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all the racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn… You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.”

Watching him on that road to recuperation is really nervy, really scary for those who understand how much is riding on this race. But every week, he makes fewer mistakes, stumbles a bit less, and gets clearer and more relaxed. Voters have been knocked flat by a pandemic, by Dobbs, by storms and mass shootings and rising prices — by reckoning with it all — and the vision of a human being who has also been knocked flat making his way back toward health along an unlikely and precarious path is very powerful. As Gisele says she tries to teach their children every day, “Nothing is the end other than death.”
