Wishing you and yours a Happy Hanukkah! Hanukkah is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays. It is a festive eight-day celebration that for many people falls during the darkest, coldest season of the year. Also called the Festival of Lights, the holiday brings light, joy, and warmth to our homes and communities as we celebrate with candles, food, family, and friends.

Today is National Senior Citizen's Day. This day is set aside to let elderly persons in your life know how much you care and to recognize their accomplishments. Seniors are still active in our community and have a strong presence in the workforce. For all they do and have achieved for the good of the community, senior citizens deserve our thanks!
President Ronald Reagan took the initiative to honor seniors in 1988 when he signed Proclamation 5847 and marked August 21 as the day seniors will be celebrated. “Throughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land,” Reagan proclaimed. “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.”

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL SENIOR CITIZENS DAY
1. Donate to a nursing/retirement home
One of the kindest and most rewarding things one can do is to donate essential goods or gifts to a nursing/retirement home. Give your nearest facility a call and ask them whether they have a shortage of anything. Or simply drop off some chocolates, juice boxes, or any other treats. You can really make a difference in someone’s life.

2. Reach out to a senior family member
Do you have a senior family member? Perhaps it’s a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle. Visit them and spend some time together. If you can’t see them in person, don't text — call! Let them hear the warmth in your voice when you tell them how much you appreciate them.

3. Have fun!
Are you a senior citizen yourself? Well, today is all about you! Live it up and treat yourself. Spend time with your favorite people, go shopping — do whatever you like. This could be the day you finally try that one thing you never have time for or perhaps it's a perfect day to chill at home. You’ve earned this time, so enjoy it!

Volunteer Spotlight: Judi:

Judi started delivering meals in September 2020 when her friend shared a copy of the JOCO magazine with an article on the need for volunteers. Judi had just purchased a new car, so it was perfect timing. One of the most rewarding parts of volunteering has been visiting with the meal recipients. She noticed that some clients are lonely and by sharing stories with each other, she makes a human connection and combats isolation. "Serving others is beyond what words can describe; it's all about community, relationships and it really does take a village". Thank you, Judi, for your service to our program.

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the celebration in recognizing the month as Older Americans Month. As every one of you know, older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities – as family members, friends, co-workers, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, and many other roles. This month, the national theme for Older Americans Month 2022 is Age My Way. This year’s theme focuses on how older adults can age in their communities, living independently for as long as possible and participating in ways they choose.

While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things that everyone can consider:
• Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you.
• Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities.
• Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place.
• Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stay connected to your community.

We are excited to celebrate Older Americans Month with all of our partners in the aging community. Diverse communities are strong communities. Ensuring that older adults remain involved and included in our communities for as long as possible benefits everyone.
