Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance, we remember our transgender and non-binary siblings who have been lost to violence. In the past year, there were 331 reported killings of transgender and gender-diverse people. Anti-transgender violence is pervasive throughout the world and too often results in loss of life. But 331 murders doesn't account for the multitude more who were victims of hate crimes, abuse, self-harm, and su***de.
We launched TransWIN, the Trans Wellness Information Network, in 2018 as a small way of supporting those in our community in finding trans/nonbinary-competent health care, especially mental health providers. It is so important that in a world out to harm us, we have the access and ability to care for ourselves and wellness providers who support this.
Today, please affirm and care for your transgender and non-binary friends and family. Our community is under attack and hurting. Please share this post with your networks. If you are transgender or non-binary and have access to a trans-competent wellness provider, we encourage you to add that provider to TransWIN so that others will have an easier time finding quality care.

CALLING ALL CIS ALLIES:
This Saturday, March 30th, 1-5 pm, is co-hosting a great event called the Trans Visibility Community Festival. Unlike most pride events nowadays, it's FREE to attend, exhibit, and eat. We will also have ASL interpreters. The event is truly about bringing the trans community together and celebrating our journeys with those that support us.
To make this event a success, we really need our cis allies to show up for us. Here are a few ways you can do so:
1) Come to the event, watch our films, cheer on our trans performers, and support our trans artists.
2) Buy a raffle ticket. Over 75% of the prizes are not trans-specific and you don't need to be present to win. Most prizes can be delivered digitally and the rest can be picked up from me if you're not there. We have Nats tickets, concert tickets, restaurant gift cards. If ya win something trans-specific, donate it to a friend, or back to the raffle! See the full list of prizes here: https://www.transvisibilityfestival.com/raffle
3) Not in the DMV area? No problem. Send a few bucks our way via Venmo or PayPal at [email protected] and specify it's for the festival.
We want to make this an annual event to make sure our community has an inclusive and accessible space to celebrate, but we need your support.
We hope to see you there!

OPPORTUNITY for trans, nonbinary and gender expansive folx, ages 18-34, in the DMV area. The deadline to apply is April 5th, 2019.
DCATS and Trans Healthcare MD (THMD)have launched Trans Youth Advocates DMV, an annual program for trans people to develop their skills in a collaborative, intentional space, alongside other local trans youth leaders. With a focus on trans resilience and liberation, this program will bring together a cohort of 20 trans, nonbinary and gender expansive people from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia.
The program begins with a compensated two-day workshop in Washington DC, led by Jaymie Campbell from the Transgender Training Institute (TTI), followed by a three-month program in which participants apply their skills to ongoing projects they’re involved with, projects led by hosting organizations, or new projects created in collaboration with DCATS and THMD.

An article shedding some light on the lack of healthcare access for most trans folx and a shout out to DCATS 'project, Trans Wellness Information Network- Transwin
Some comments are disheartening. The idea that simply being trans means you need to see a specialist for basic care, including hormones, is a myth. Doctors that turn trans people away and claim they're not being discriminatory, but instead, are "not qualified," simply refuse to do some basic research. After all, they've been giving hormones to cis people for decades. What happens when all doctors claim a lack of expertise or simply refuse to see a trans patient? A significant lack of providers, a desperate community, and increased su***de rates.
Many transgender people drive hours to find health care. These advocates are trying to change that. For transgender people in large swaths of Maryland and Virginia, options for medical care are slim to none.
We've recently brought on a new team and will be actively seeking your trans-competent recommendations and reviews!
Provider of the Day: Signey Olson

Physicians admit a lack training, exposure, and untrained staff, though 86% were willing to provide patients routine care. Willingness doesn't equal competence.
