The consensus among these rating agencies is that Horace Mann is in a solid position to meet its obligations with “A” ratings across the board. We’re motivated by the fact that educators take care of our children’s future, and we believe they deserve someone to look after theirs. We help educators identify their financial goals and develop plans to achieve them. This includes insurance (auto, home, life and disability) to protect what they have today and financial products (403(b)’s, 457’s, IRA’s, 529 college savings plans) to help them prepare for their future. Our tailored offerings include special rates and benefits for educators (Educator Advantage attached). With that, here is a summary of our educator resources and programs installed within the districts we have partnerships with:

*Student Loan Solutions via scheduled workshops or by appointment
The Federal Reserve says student loan debt in the United States totals more than $1.2 trillion. Many students, including young educators entering the workforce for the first time, are bringing more than $35,000 in debt with them, according to Edvisors. And overcoming this debt can be a challenge for many educators. Horace Mann understands new teachers want information on how to meet financial goals, including dealing with student loan debt. At this free workshop, you’ll learn the 3 Rs to financial success:
Remove – You may qualify for federal forgiveness programs to remove some or all of your debt. Reduce – Loan repayment and refinance options may reduce your monthly payments. Redirect – Redirect savings to prepare for other life goals, such as retirement. To date, Horace Mann has helped educators find more than $250 million in student loan forgiveness.

*DonorsChoose classroom funding
Most teachers spend hundreds of dollars each year on school supplies. DonorsChoose can help you get funding for classroom materials and projects without reaching into their own pocket. We are a national sponsor of DonorsChoose, a website and nonprofit organization that connects public school teachers in need of classroom materials and experiences with individual donors who want to help. Since partnering with DonorsChoose in 2011, we've donated more than $4.4 million to projects on the website.

*State Teachers' Retirement System (STRS)
This workshop is designed to teach teachers about their State Teachers’ Retirement System (PERS workshops are also available), a key component of retirement planning. Discussion topics include:
the benefits your STRS provides;
how your retirement income is determined; and
how your STRS income should fit into your overall retirement strategy.

*Financial Success
This workshop will help you examine your spending habits, reduce your debt and get on the road to financial success. Horace Mann understands teachers just entering the profession need more information on how to meet financial goals. If you attend our workshop on financial success, you'll learn about a variety of topics including:
developing positive spending habits;
establishing good credit;
the importance of a good credit score;
protecting assets; and
saving and preparing for retirement.

*Horace Mann - NEA Foundation Award
Horace Mann partners with the NEA Foundation to recognize, reward and promote excellence in teaching through the annual Horace Mann Awards for Teaching Excellence. We congratulated and rewarded five winners in 2020.

*PASS Programs
We believe perfect attendance and personal achievement spell success. Our agents are helping teachers and administrators across the country motivate schoolchildren to reach their full potential through the PASS programs they sponsor. The Perfect Attendance Spells Success program helps address the impact attendance rates have on student performance. The program gets students excited about going to school by rewarding them with prizes, such as a bike or an Amazon Kindle Fire. The Personal Achievement Spells Success program encourages students to achieve the academic goals or classroom accomplishments you set. Students who respond well to the program qualify for prizes, just like in our Perfect Attendance Spells Success program. For each PASS program, the teacher and school/district set the criteria, decide how long the program runs and determine how prize winners will be chosen.

*Local Educator Recognition Programs (working with the DO)
The Crystal Apple/Crystal Owl Award recognizes educators for the outstanding work they do or a significant achievement in teaching by rewarding them with a gift card. The Outstanding School Employee Award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond in contributing to student development by rewarding them with a gift card.
