Rescue out of a whiskey barrel today. Bees had been there for about three years. It took three boxes to accommodate the large hive. Yesterday we were called to help our good friends at Summerset Farm in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. They had a hive that had been in a cart for well over five years. It had guard bees that had been chasing people and they finally decided it need to go. It turned out to be very healthy, with a large population and well stocked with abundant honey in the pantry. It was impossible to locate the queen, but after removing much of the comb we took our lunch break and when we returned, a group of bees had settled into a corner of the box. We grabbed a few more scoops of bees and boom, the bees started their march. All in all we ended up with three boxes full of brood, pollen, nectar, honey, and lots of bees.
