Gather ‘round the Table!
Being in the kitchen with your loved ones is special! I’ve seen it from Thanksgiving to Christmas, from Easter to birthdays. Just being together and helping out, even if it’s sticking something in the fridge, brings so much joy! I have seen kids cooking in the kitchen, baking with parents and grandparents and that is also so fun to watch.
What’s the next part of it all? Sitting around the table together and breaking bread (or just eating it); you know!! As a society, it’s clear that we have come so far from the days when there was dinner at the table every single night with Dad, Mom and kiddos. Sometimes I think people tend to forget that even just adults can sit around the table. We put our food down at the coffee table or sit with it on the couch and binge watch those shows instead. Or we take it to our desk and keep working. Why? Don’t we realize that we’re missing out on so much?
Besides just straight up family tradition being ingrained, what about these benefits?
DEVELOPMENTAL BOOSTS - If you do have little ones, sharing dinner at the table does several awesome things! It promotes language skills as you talk with them, and your partner, about the day. It helps develop patience and dexterity by using those utensils. What about the social skills that include manners and taking turns? So what if the spaghetti ends up on the floor? Dinner conversation is a more potent vocabulary-booster than reading, and the stories told around the kitchen table help our children build resilience.
