As we've learned from the podcast—where we've talked with people like Maria Ressa, Sal Khan, Senator Michael Bennet, Tristan Harris, Bishop Paul Tighe, Timnit Gebru, and others—and everyone agrees, technology is moving really fast. How are we supposed to make sense of it all?

That's where the new Substack newsletter comes in. Each week, Raffi will break down what's going on in the world to make sense of it through a Technically Optimistic lens. Together, we can decode the collision between technology, humanity, and power so we can navigate this landscape not just as users, but as participants. Today is Early Vote Day! Schools that run voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote campaigns usually have a straightforward goal—raise the number of students who exercise their rights to the franchise in the next election. But a new study suggests that getting more young people to vote could increase their parents’ political participation, too, a “trickle up” effect that can pay dividends across generations.

EC partner Generation Citizen has a number of recommendations for harnessing age diversity to foster civic participation including leveraging cross-generational collaboration, establishing clean and candid communication, and supporting storytelling. What is the carbon footprint of your favorite snack? In 2019, Julia Collins found herself obsessed with this question. “I wanted to understand the total carbon footprint of a box of crackers,” she says. She discovered there weren’t great options for getting a reliable, affordable analysis of the carbon involved in cracker-making.

EC portfolio partner Planet FWD is poised to revolutionize the food and beverage industry with their newly launched AI-powered platform. The tool simplifies the process of measuring and mitigating supply chain emissions across the food chain by modeling product-level emissions, and tracing them from farm to the compost bin.

Through partnerships with global industry leaders like Rodelle and Compass Group, Planet FWD is helping the world’s largest food companies tackle the 34% of global greenhouse gas emissions attributed to food. Read more about Julia Collins and Planet FWD on Forbes. https://bit.ly/3tRNHxb

“It's not a silver bullet. We're not going to solve climate change just by permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere. In fact, it's probably somewhere around a 10% part of the solution. But for a problem as big as climate change, a 10% solution is a really important solution. Everything is a small part of this puzzle.” – Zeke Hausfather, climate research lead at Stripe’s Frontier initiative.

In October 2020, Stripe launched Stripe Climate which allows any customer to direct a fraction of their revenue towards carbon removal. The company allocates contributions towards projects that remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, primarily by purchasing the permanent removal of CO2 at a particular price per ton. In 2022, the initiative evolved into Frontier, an advance market commitment to buy an initial $1B+ of permanent carbon removal between 2022 and 2030. It was founded by Stripe, Alphabet, Shopify, Meta, McKinsey and tens of thousands of businesses using Stripe Climate.

Stripe's Zeke Hausfather sat down with Susy Schöneberg on Emerson Collective's venture team to discuss leveraging business ecosystems for impact. Read on in our link below: https://bit.ly/3rJTULb

How can education unlock the potential of young people behind bars? In the newest episode of David Domenici shares his experience providing a high quality education to incarcerated youth.

Each year, more than 200,000 young people are held in hundreds of juvenile-detention centers across the U.S., many of which do not provide a quality education to the students in their care. That’s why David Domenici founded the Maya Angelou Schools & See Forever Foundation, a successful network of alternative schools in Washington, D.C., and BreakFree Education, which works closely with teachers and incarcerated students to advocate for policy change and advise prison educational programs.

In David’s conversation with Dwayne Betts he shares about his experience transforming the notorious Oak Hill juvenile facility into the Maya Angelou Academy; the books that have changed the lives of his students; and why it’s so important to see all young people—in and out of prison—as students first.

Both established philanthropists and new funds are leveraging their giving to promote innovation and systemic change to meet the needs created by urgent challenges. Philanthropy now sits at a critical moment to re-examine what practices drive the greatest progress and change. Philanthropy has always helped create transformative and systemic change. The work being done to address our most pressing challenges is all being driven to some extent by institutional funding, long-term commitments, and deliberative investments. Charities are also embracing newer models – including strategic time horizons, democratized giving, trust-based philanthropy, and accelerated investments that directly reach individuals and frontline communities. Collaboration and education between new voices and long-established philanthropic institutions have the potential for greater impact and progress.
