The number of novel 2019 coronavirus infections doubled in size every 7.4 days early (Jan. 29 in the New England Journal of Medicine). The median age of the first 425 patients was 59 years; woman get the infection ~ equal to men.
5-days is the mean incubation period (~3% of cases the incubation is longer than 12 days).
Are MRI scans safe with Tattoos?
Sports med docs see many patient-athletes (like Colin Kaepernick seen in recent espn body issue) with cosmetic tattoos requiring MRIs to diagnose musculoskeletal injuries.
"At risk" tattoos contain iron oxide pigments featuring large circular objects or multiple adjacent points which can rarely create an electromagnetic current due to the ferromagnetic metallic compounds increasing local skin temp enough to cause a mild, transient cutaneous burn (and also potentially to distort the MRI image). This electrical arc between 2 separate tattoos may be treated prophylactically or symptomatically with a cold towel between involved adjacent tattoos.

Just got to rant a bit on KGO-TV ABC Evening News in SanFran. Yes this is national news! Dating apps are fueling an STD epidemic.

Turtles love the suns heat.
Humans benefit from sun exposure too - natural skin production of vitamin D and the release of melatonin, a feel good hormone.
A modest amount of sun is good. If the skin turns red, you over did it!
Why it’s a curse to be a doctor!

Does your dog literally howl when you tell a really funny joke?
Yes. Occasionally I drink alcohol - specifically on weekends if rock n roll is being played (I think The Who qualifies)
Observations in the park:
Working out with sweats on a warm summer day is counter productive. 1. Athletic ability begins to decrease with just 1-2% dehydration ( an acute 1-2% weight drop) which interferes with optimal fitness training
2. Warm-ups increase body temp to about 100 degrees which optimizes joint and muscle function. 3. Sweat gear can result in further temp elevations. 4.Unfit persons in hot environments can get scary temps of 103 or more with vigorous exercise (I see this via stomach thermometer pills) which markedly increases the risk of hyperthermia, an uncommon but very dangerous complication.
Avoid sweats in warm weather.

New Lancet Psychiatry Study says "More" Exercise Isn't Necessarily Better? Don't Believe It!
1.2 million adults asked how many days they felt depressed or stressed.
People who did no extra physical activity - depressed or stressed an average of 3.4 days/month. Regular exercisers (45 minutes exercise three to five times a week) reported just two days, a reduction of 43 per cent.
However the researchers said persons regularly exercising for periods of 90 minutes or more at a time suffered up to one day extra (3 days) of "poor" mental health each month. All types of exercise were associated with improved mental health, but the strongest benefits were seen for team sports.
I don’t buy this studies conclusions!
#1 I've never in my life heard of a team sport that takes less than 90 min to practice - or play! This is a big internal inconsistency.
#2 However, the biggest flaw is the premise of the study - self-reported days of being stressed or depressed!
The self-definition of "stress" is night and day different from depression! "Stress" can be good or even exhilarating - it definitely is not in many circumstances a sign of poor mental health!!!

Try to drink at least 500cc of water before all work outs.
Intake of Water during workouts of an hour or less is optional.
But if you do bring water, as in this case, bring a bottle in each hand!
Why not balance out and get upper body exercise while walk/jogging?
Ps. holding 500cc of fluid equals holding a 1.1 pound weight
Walking on soft sand burns twice the calories of walking the same distance on hard flat surface. Ok, 350 Calories per hour still is not a major calorie burn but if you factor in wave induced tranquility, it’s an hour well spent!
Liver Cancer Deaths are Dramatically Up in US!
The death rate for liver cancer has increased by nearly 50% since 2000 even as overall cancer deaths in the US have dropped!
The culprit? Fatty liver due to central obesity and diabetes. Hepatitis B and C viruses may also contribute.
Solutions? 1. Workout (everyone capable of that) 2. Lose weight if belt overhang (possible but more difficult) 3. Get tested for Hep C and vaccinated for Hep A and B
Low-dose aspirin (81 mg) has been used by doctors for decades to prevent heart attacks and strokes in persons at risk (family history heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smokers and sedentary individuals)
A Lancet study suggests it only works in folks weighing less than 70 kg (154 lbs)! Persons with more fat have more esterases, which clear aspirin and reduce its bioavailability -- high dose aspirin may be needed
A one dose prevention approach does not appear to work.

When you look at yourself and see something else no one else sees, we call this your “fat-person goggles.” It takes months for your self-perception to adjust. You are a work in progress!
Striding over fallen leaves while breathing in the crisp morning air versus plodding but going nowhere on a treadmill in a sweaty gymnasium under a wall decorated with television talking heads...is there really any comparison?
Moderate walking doesn’t qualify as a “weight-loss” exercise. You need to exercise at the edge of your ability––this is called intense exercise. The more intense your exercise, the more cardiovascular benefits you recieve.
One trick to increase your calorie burn: split your two hours of exercise into morning and evening workouts.
This results in more calories burned compared with doing two consecutive hours of exercise. Three 40-minute workout sessions a day might be even better, but that's less practical.
Shoulder pulls are a godsend for anyone who is paid to hunch over a tyrannical computer screen all day long or for anyone who tends to slouch.
Front Shoulder Pull Exercise:
1. Start position: Lay face down, lower chest on top of a swiss ball, legs spread. Initially, it’s okay to slide your feet flush against the base of a wall for stability. Grip dumbbells lying on the floor, palms pointing toward your feet.
2. Now lift your arms–bend the elbows and pull the weights upward on both sides of your body to their respective lateral breast. Concentrate on squeezing the shoulder blades together.
3. Slowly return the weights toward the floor until arms are extended down back to the start position and repeat.
Your excess fat is a deliberate poison.
It’s not easy, but two hours per day of exercise with calorie counting and moderate caloric restrictions for six months is a small price to pay to remove the poison.
It’s time for you to get fit. Sure, you may not look or feel much like an athlete right now, but believe me, you’ve inherited the requisite walk-jog abilities.
