What behaviour do you want to work on with your kids this summer?

For many of my clients, summer is a time they like to work on setting family meetings, one on one’s with their kids, or work on specific behaviours that their child is struggling with.
Do you have a behaviour goal this summer?

As parents, it’s easy to unintentionally ignore our kids by saying “you’re okay,” “that’s fine,” or “okay.”
Here are some better phrases to help your kids feel heard.
“It’s okay to cry”
“How can we make this better (for you?)”
“Do you want a hug?
“I’m sorry this happened to you.”
“How can I help?”
“How can we fix this?”
What phrases help your family feel heard or connected?

Board games are an amazing summer rain day activity. A board game helps our children work on problem solving, strategy, character building, and makes lasting memories.

But remember depending on the ages of your kids, this might not be a great activity before bed or when over tired.

What’s your families favourite board game?

❌A book is not a mentor.
❌A podcast is not a mentor.
âś…A mentor has to be able to look you in the eye and ask the hard questions.
If you want to fast track your success this summer I have a few spaces open in our Group Coaching Program.
Give me three months and we can transform your home life!❤

What was your favourite rain day activity from childhood?

Changing routine for the summer might feel so exciting for mom- with less hustle and less to remember. But your children might struggle with the change.
Feel lost, bored, nervous or even stressed. As you walk the next few weeks you may see behaviours change as your children express these emotions through behaviour.
What are some routines or pieces of your day you can keep the same to help your child enjoy summer, while committing to less for your sanity?

When your child says, “I hate you!” “You aren’t my favourite!”
They mean, “I’m angry, I’m hurt, I don’t understand, I need to process, I need you to be my safe place.”

21/06/2024

What do you need to grieve?
Aside from the obvious devastating grief we go through, there are hidden forms of grief like:
Processing losses in body image. Your body is not the same after kids, and we need to learn how to work with it and not hate it.
Accepting that our life isn’t what we thought it would be. Daily life with kids is much harder than we imagined. Marriages are difficult, and some of them don’t work out. Even in a “good” life, we have to let go of our expectations and judgement.
When our kids go through something, we experience our own past all over again. If you were bullied as a kid and your child comes home and tells you a classmate pushed them down on the playground, you will feel your heart break all over again as you deal with it twice! First in your past, and second with your child.

Try this!

Write a letter to yourself now, or to a past version of you, and tell them what you wished somebody would say. Imagine a great mentor or friend could come alongside you, put their arms around you and tell you that it’s going to be ok and that you’re not alone. Write all of this down. It will help you as you process grief.

If you’re ready to dig deep, DM me and let me be that person for you.
I’ll walk you home.

20/06/2024

Do your kids struggle when you tell them an instruction that needs follow thru?
One way you can help your kids own these decisions, the need to listen, and follow thru is by giving choices as often as possible.
Just like adults, children want control too. If they constantly feel threatened, bossed, or out of control, you will likely receive more pushback.

20/06/2024

Why do I feel mom guilt all the time?

What’s your number 1 marriage question?

17/06/2024

Do your kids struggle with follow through?
Here’s an activity you can use as early as toddlers:
“Please go get/ do this then come back to me.”
You can have them come back for a high five, come back for part two of what you need done, or whatever you decide.
This will help with accountability, follow thru, and learning to listen.

What other activities helped your kids learn follow thru?

Photos from Families Matter Most's post 17/06/2024

When your child breaks a lamp and lies and says they didn't do it because they don't want to get yelled at, they are lying to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

(This is an important reason we need to work on our own anger, so that we don't unintentionally scare our kids into lying.)

Once you've uncovered the motivation for the lie, talk about the character you'd like to develop in your child ie: honesty, integrity.

Say things like, "In our family, we tell the truth even when it's hard.". "We do the hard things before we do the fun things" "We are honest and we deal with our mistakes."
-Another tip to develop honesty and help your child succeed ➡️Before you ask them a question they might be tempted to lie about, say: "I'm going to ask you a question, and remember, in our family we tell the truth. Ready?"

I recommend that that the consequence for lying is BIG. Your kid needs to learn that it never pays to lie and it would've been better to tell the truth and have the original consequence.

It takes awhile to develop honesty, but it's worth it!

Save this for when you need it! And if you're ready for coaching let me know!
