Starkiller…

30 years ago, we made some recordings with Paul Woody Annison at Hothouse Audio St Kilda. Our record company at the time decided the versions were too live and rejected them. We went back to the studio and did some new takes, other versions, which we then took up to Sydney to mix with the late great Rick Will. And, so, Purekiller was born.

We always liked the other recordings, though. In my case, I preferred the energy and imperfection of them as I thought they really represented, in some cases, more accurately, what Defryme was all about.

Starkiller is an EP that is comprised of the earlier versions we recorded, and loved, and some instrumentals I’ve been able to new vocals to.

I didn’t have every song, and some, to be honest, some did actually turn out a little better in Purekiller, but what is on Starkiller would have to be my favourites.

The 'Starkiller' EP versions are performed by the original 'Purekiller' line-up, and more accurately represents the band’s dynamic live energy from that time.

News just in.. once recording for “Starkiller”, an EP of the best from “Purekiller”, is complete, work will begin on Defryme’s second full-length album, “Allkiller”.

The album will feature previously un-recorded live classics, tracks recorded in the 90’s in preparation for a second release, a couple of rippers from 2013 and a few all-new beauties.

These are the guitars we’ll be using to create the new stuff!

We mentioned we’d have some good news to follow and we do!

We’d like to welcome David Beaton and Nik Stavrakis to Defryme.

First up… Dave has a long and distinguished rock and roll bass pedigree, and anyone in the Melbourne scene who knows him knows he’s going to be an amazing fit for us. The fact that he was also a member of Serigon, a band that was coming up at the same time as us, is just a happy coincidence and a further indication that it’s the right choice for both him and for us.

We’d like all Defryme fans to join us in welcoming Dave to the gang… and we are that literally.

Next…

Back in 2019, we did a few gigs with an amazing musician named Andrew Duganzich who played both keys and guitar in the band. Lockdown saw Andrew move on to other things but it gave the opportunity to another to take that slot in the band and make it his own.

Friends and fans, please join us in welcoming Nik Stavrakis to Defryme!

Nik has spent the majority of his career fine-tuning his skills in all types of musicianship and musical styles but what he’ll be doing for us is bringing an amazing feel and rhythm as a second guitarist and vocalist to our sound.

Nils previous band, Sweet Death Machine, also featured our new bassist Dave, so there a certain method in the madness for us and we couldn’t be happier than to welcome them along for the ride.

If rehearsals for this month’s show are any indication…
It’s gonna be fun!

‘Rymers! We have not so good news and we have great news!

The not so good news is that due to other commitments, our brother Mikey won’t be playing live with us anymore. Sure, he’ll help out with some playing on the 4.0 album, but after 33 years, our remaining founding member has slung up his mud bass.

We know Mikey wishes us well with the new album and is keen to add his playing to some of the legacy tracks that will go on it, so he’s still invested and still very much a part of the family… but we’re gonna miss him.

The great news is that we have found someone that we think will do a stellar job filling those massive bass boots…

We will fill you in further tomorrow….
