Kalannie CWA
Our organisation provides community service, support networks, welfare in times of need, educational opportunities, friendship, fun and a great deal more.
Come along and have a cuppa, make some new friends and perhaps discover an opportunity to be more active in your community! We may be small, but we can achieve greatness when we stand together.
Happy Birthday π

π₯³ Mavis Mincherton turns 100 π₯³
π Today marks a very special day for Mavis Mincherton as she celebrates her 100th Birthday. We went and visited Mavis today at Wongan Hills hospital to pass on our congratulations on reaching this major milestone.
π Shire President Cr Mandy Stephenson delivered Mavis some beautiful flowers and a card on behalf of the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu and Councillors, wishing Mavis a Happy Birthday on her special day. The card from King Charles hasn't yet arrived but hopefully it's on its way π
π Mavis shared stories of being born in Bassendean and moving to Salmon Gums when she was 6 years old, where her parents then farmed. Mavis and her family moved to Ballidu in 1953 and has lived in our region ever since. Mavis was a keen bowls player, where she met her late husband Gibb Mincherton playing in Wongan Hills. Mavis has been a member of CWA since 1944 and has been an honoured member of the Wongan Branch for many years.
π We are sure you will join us in wishing Mavis a very special Happy Birthday on this wonderful milestone. Pick up a copy of this week's Boomer to read Mavis' full story.
Afternoon Tea at Football today will raise money for the Cancer Council. πΌ

GREAT NEWS β’ the Minister for Transport has announced funding to upgrade passive rail crossings in regional WA, this is a good and worthy investment of our taxpayer dollars!
Congratulations to Lara Jenson and the families and supporters that have been campaigning for change - itβs a significant milestone toward improving safety for everyone on our roads and for rail users.
The work continues to ensure appropriate lighting on trains is mandated across our nation.

EASY, RELIABLE AND TASTY RECIPE BOOK
RAISING FUNDS TO IMPROVE TRAIN LIGHTING AND SUPPORT THE PASSIVE LEVEL CROSSING SAFETY CAMPAIGN
During the CWA of WA State Conference 2022 in Gingin, the issue of Improving Train Lighting and Passive Level Crossing Safety around Australia was introduced to members by passionate campaigner, Lara Jensen, a member of our Kirkalocka Branch whose brother, Christian and his friends were killed when their car collided with a wheat train near Jennacubbine in 2000.
Lara has dedicated her life to ensuring no other family suffers such a tragedy and has been lobbying Government and industry to improve safety standards since this time. Our Association joined the journey with her and the 12 other affected family members, over a year ago (as did CWA of NSW) to add our voice to this devastating problem which poses serious dangers to regional motorists.
Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of their new recipe book which has been lovingly and carefully collated by Lara's sister, Annemaree Jensen, to raise funds for their Improve Train Lighting And Passive Level Crossing Safety campaign.
Their recipe book is $45 including free postage to anywhere in Australia. It is a gloss-bound softcover book with 233 recipes spanning the full range of savoury and sweet recipes including entrees, chicken, beef, beef mince, lamb, pork & bacon, seafood, savoury pastries, vegetables, salads, cakes, biscuits, slices, muffins, desserts and more. Rural photos divide sections of the book.
Anyone interested in purchasing a copy of the book can contact Annemaree Jensen email: [email protected] Please provide a telephone number when you email Annemaree so she has an alternate way to contact you when the cookbooks are ready to be dispatched.
Here is a paragraph from the introduction to the cookbook with a summary of the campaign:
"If you have driven anywhere in rural or regional Australia, you would have noticed that semi-trailer trucks are lit up by around 36 lights plus 2 headlights. In contrast, trains are equipped with only one or two headlights and two small ditch lights that are directed at the track. This is despite the fact that trains weigh at least 3,000 tonnes, are on average 1.5 kilometres long and take over a kilometre to stop, whereas semi-trailer trucks are far lighter, only around 36 metres long and take less than 200 metres to stop. We are fighting for improved train lighting to immediately address this double standard. We are also pushing governments to install widely available and cheap solar-powered flashing light technology at passive level crossings in addition to legislating for lights on trains, instead of ignoring this widely available technology."
Thank you for your support.
