Primary school allocation day!
Did you get the school you wanted?
I forgot to pop on yesterday to do a TOP TIP TUESDAY so here goesâŠ
You might not feel like youâve got much time this holiday to focus on your childâs speech and language, but a simple 10 minutes of non-directive play will work wonders. After all âplay is the work of childhoodâ
* Turn off all devices and back ground noise.
*Let your child choose what they want to play with.
*Get down to their level and most importantly LET THEM LEAD THE PLAY. You can play along side or gently join in, but try to follow their ideas rather than directing the play.
* use this time to comment on what is happening, depending on what level your child is at. âUh ohâŠtrain fell downâ âDog eatingâ âmore diggingâ âman up highâ
* This could be a good time to extend your childâs utterances by adding a word on to what they say.
Have fun and let me know below how you get on. đ
3 TOP TIPS for SPEECH SOUNDS
* repeat your childâs words back to them modelling correct use of speech sounds. (Thereâs no need to make them say it correctly)
* Give them a forced choice âis it a bish or a fish?â (If they still say it wrong, simply model the correct word again and move on).
*go on a sound hunt around the house or garden for objects that start a particular sound. Label the objects when you find them e.g âwe found a fish, a fork, a fairy â your child does not need to say the words but hearing the sounds in words repeatedly is helpful.
Top Tips for Talking Easter Edition đŁđ°
I recently bought this Easter game in Aldi; heres some ideas on how to use it to promote talking
* If your child isnât talking yet you can model single words âeggâ âspoonâ âready steadyâŠâŠgoâ âonâ âmoreâ You can also model symbolic noises (these count as words) mmmâ âyumâ (as you pretend to eat the eggâ, âuh ohâ (When the egg falls off).
*If your child is using single words you could add a word on to what they say e.g. if your child says âeggâ. You say âblue eggâ. You could give some choices âpink egg or blue egg?â âShall we walk or run?â
*If your child is already putting a few words together you can model longer sentences e.g. âblue egg fell downâ
