Leadership Development
‘Intentionality’:
✔️ Let’s start with You the Leader.
Let’s just go with the wild ass assumption (pardon my French) you are in fact, a solid Leader🤔
Let’s also assume you are either a CEO (with your executive team of leaders and levels of leaders down below)
OR you are a Mid-level Manager with a few subordinate leaders…
? Got The Picture ?
Here’s where INTENTIONALITY needs to play in, but rarely does….
✔️Because you are that solid leader, …we can also assume you have a solid team following you! Good for You & your team👊🏼
😉However w/out INTENTIONALITY most leaders (as described above), are believing because of ‘role modeling and maybe osmosis’ - he or she is teaching and growing future leaders!?!
👌🏼Trust the Coach here. Your leadership may have created a great team of followers; but that on its own merit does not create future, downline Leaders…..
✔️There is no process or system in place to grow future leaders - only hope and belief in ‘role modeling and osmosis’!
👉🏼You are/were not just a natural leader; you learned Leadership somewhere, somehow.
✔️Leader Development INTENTIONALITY - is creating a learning process or system based on 1) solid targeted principles/competencies and 2) a routine feedback process!
🤞🏽All this wishing, hoping, & assuming is why all those managers ‘below you’ are not ‘being’ You - that solid leader!!!
—-The culprit here? —-
A lack of INTENTIONALITY and your unconscious belief in role modeling and osmosis…

This book (2009) is a focus on the dilemma of what “leading people” is all about; and why many struggle with and maybe even hate managing people.
For managers, supervisors and yes, even executives out there, the answer is very simple-“you never learned how.”
______
Think about this for a moment. Pick something in your life that you enjoy doing and have become skilled at doing.
Would you or could you have ever successfully done it (much less enjoy it) - if you hadn’t first learned how?
Yes, there is the argument that some people are natural born leaders. For now, let’s just accept that just as there are not many piano aficionados, there are also not many managers just born with natural leadership ability. Therefore, we don’t see many of either one!
And yet, we take an awesome, respected and productive (i.e.) Welder -give him/her a few years to gain some seniority and expertise- and eventually declare him to be the new Supervisor of Welders!
It’s as if the company says, “Here ol’ great welder, you are now in charge. Here are your 10 people. Now go screw them up!”
______
In organization after organization in which I consult in ‘leadership’, I see this same common approach to leadership selection & development.
The organization is attempting to improve productivity, solve quality issues, make change, resolve conflict and/or increase profitability with “untrained leadership and management”.
These are previously employees who “know their stuff” when it comes to technical, operational or business issues -
but were never trained for management/leadership roles.
This scenario is perpetuated through the years, and up & down the management chain.
It’s no wonder so many people become frustrated with management!…”
______
“Why don’t they just do what I say and respect me? After all, I am their boss!” There is a lot of mumbling and grumbling about how this person has forgotten where he/she came from, and who their friends are.
They mutter to themselves, “I am not a bad person, why isn’t this working?”
Consider this quote as part of the solution:
“People don’t care how much you know until they first know how much you care”………

✔️This is what LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT is for most in management…
✔️Swiping through images & quotes (even if you do it lots & even if they are really good)…..
✔️These won’t cause real behavioral learning & the development of leaders!?!
✔️ It requires much more ‘intentionality’ to internalize & cause behavioral change my friend🤔✌🏼

👉🏼It’s amazing to think that organizations (over & over & over) promote people, Individual Contributors into positions of leadership,
…without one single minute of leadership development under their belt.
Over & over & over, said organizations practice this insanity - apparently just assuming anyone can lead with expertise of product or service!
✔️And then said organizations wonder why their churn and turnover is so high.
Answer: People leave ineffective leaders & leadership, not organizations, cuz…
“People don’t care how much you know until they first know how much you care .”
This cycle continues as organizations go right back to spending all kinds of money, time and effort to find the very best people,
…to again place them under managers who have no proven leadership / with no leadership development, training or evidence that they know LEADERSHIP”!
That’s INSANITY🤔
…is this your organization, business or team/staff?

Transformational leadership is the practice by which leaders inspire and empower others to innovate and create change that will positively impact the Fraternity and ultimately the world. Read in this new quarterly series on leadership how Kansas State Sigs Mark Potts, 2016, and Ryder Chaffee, 2018, have channeled their personal experiences entering the workforce after college into a nonprofit that promotes young adults' personal and professional development while taking a proactive approach to supporting mental well-being with the Go Further Foundation.
